Congratulations to Carol Van Zile-Tamsen, PhD ’96, EdM ’91, recipient of UB’s Distinguished Alumni Award for the Graduate School of Education! 🎉

As associate vice provost for faculty development and director of the Office of Curriculum, Assessment and Teaching Transformation at UB, Carol Van Zile-Tamsen provides strategic leadership for curriculum development, instructional innovation, learning technologies, student learning assessment and academic program review. She remains closely connected to as a faculty member and continues to serve on dissertation committees.

In case you missed it: “Buffalo Corridors: Jefferson Avenue” premiered at the 2026 Buffalo International Film Festival, bringing a community-led walking tour to the screen.

Directed by Ari Hock, a recent postdoctoral fellow with ’s Institute for Learning Sciences, , and produced by 's Christopher Hoadley as well as 's Lauren Ames Fischer, the film was shaped in collaboration with East Side residents. Tour guides Omar Overstreet and Lovette “Buttons” Williams helped plan the route, landmarks and themes, and participated in editing decisions.

How can schools and families make thoughtful decisions about AI in young children’s education?

’s Center for Early Literacy and Responsible AI (CELaRAI), led by ’s X. Christine Wang, has received an additional $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to help address that question.

The funding will expand national partnerships to develop research-informed guidance and action plans, with children’s learning, safety and well-being at the center.

It was a pleasure to join New York State Education Department Commissioner Dr. Betty Rosa, NYS Regent Keith B. Wiley, David Rust of Say Yes Buffalo and UB Graduate School of Education Dean Dr. Suzanne Rosenblith for a panel discussion with BOCES and NYSED leaders from across New York State today to share ideas on strengthening partnerships, addressing shared challenges and creating new opportunities for students across Erie County & Western New York!

Come along with Riley Godwin, a second-year PhD student in school psychology, for a day at the Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention’s annual conference! 💙

This year’s conference, “Shared Voices: Youth and Community Participatory Approaches to Preventing Violence and Promoting Wellness,” brought together researchers, educators, young people and community partners to learn from one another and explore collaborative approaches to supporting youth.
