Pacifica Graduate Institute Pacifica is an accredited graduate school with two campuses in Santa Barbara, California

The importance of symbol and metaphor in personal and cultural imagery or the recognition of the dynamic interplay between the natural world and the world of the human psyche—are articulated in all of the Institute's programs. At its core, Pacifica is rooted in its vision: animae mundi colendae gratia (for the sake of tending the soul of the world). Our learning environment and curriculum draws students from around the world by offering them a variety of different cultural experiences and competencies. Students learn to engage in an empathetic and meaningful way the complexity of what it means to be a global citizen and to fulfill the Pacifica mission of tending to the multiplicity of soul in the world.

Congratulations to Chantal Noa Forbes, PhD, Assistant Professor and Associate Chair of the Psychology, Religion, and Consciousness program, on her recent publication, Becoming Earth: Prehumanistic Consciousness, and Trans-Species Sentience in the Practice of Tracking, in Volume 3, Issue 1 of Ecokritike. Ecokritike is an international, open-access, double-blind peer-reviewed journal dedicated to Environmental Humanities, Literary Theory, and Cultural Criticism

Earlier this year, Dr. Noa also participated in the Frontiers of Knowledge symposium in Aspen, which explores consciousness in the living world. Her presentation, “How Human Consciousness Developed in Concert With the Nonhuman World,” examined prehumanistic consciousness, the role of tracking in the development of human intelligence, and how the philosophy of tracking might help usher in an Ecozoic Era—one characterized by mutual flourishing among all Earth’s inhabitants.

Kay Todd, PhD, LPC is one of the teachers for the upcoming Extension certificate, Art and Soul of the “Business” of Being a Licensed Clinician Graduate Certificate.

In this interview, Dr. Todd discusses the internal signals in one's life regarding their career path, the benefits of structure in clinical practice, and responding to the dynamic nature of private practice.

Kay received her PhD. In Mythological Studies with an Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica and is a graduate of the Grief, Loss and Trauma certificate program at Southwestern University in Santa Fe. Kay is a LPC, and is a practicing therapist in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is a Candidate in the Interregional Society of Jungian Analysts. She has given talks across the country on various topics: Myth, Death and Grief, Belonging: The Archetype of Home. Kay has been an adjunct professor at The University of Oklahoma and Tulsa Community College. She is a former non-profit CEO, nationally and internationally. Mysticism and the Transformation of Consciousness Conference
March 5-7, 2027

This weekend symposium brings together internationally regarded scholars in the fields of comparative mysticism, contemplative spirituality, and depth psychology, to explore the relationship between mystical experience and the transformation of consciousness. The conference also includes several pre-conference sessions, a significant exhibit of Trappist monk and author, Thomas Merton’s photography, an exhibit of local Ventura County artist, Tom Pazderka’s artwork, and a presenter meet and greet.

Hosted on the Ladera Campus at Pacifica, a Livestream registration option is also available.

Justin Hamacher recently joined Pacifica as adjunct faculty for the Depth Psychology and Creativity with Emphasis in the Arts and Humanities program. Justin is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, Zurich Jungian analyst in training, inopportune humorist and past professor of Human Computer Interaction & Design at the University of Washington. He will be sharing from his collection of live lecture drawings, exercises and artwork created during his training journey at two upcoming events.

The C.G. Jung Institute Zurich and its picture archive will present a solo exhibition by Justin featuring ‘The Visual Jung: An Artist’s Journey Through Jungian Training.’ Featuring twenty selected works, the show chronicles a decade of analytical training through imagistic notes drawn in real time during lectures in Boston and Zurich. By capturing complex psychological concepts, myths, and archetypes as spontaneous ink illustrations, the illustrated notes bridge the conscious and unconscious psyche. The immersive exhibition offers a deeply embodied, visually driven exploration of training in analytical psychology, transforming abstract Jungian theory into expressive artistic metaphor and dynamic, living visual imaginations. The projected will be presented now through June 2027.

Justin will also be speaking November 14 at the Kristine Mann Library in New York City as part of Artistic Encounters with Jung – A One Day Symposium. It will feature his research project The Visual Jung: An Artist’s Journey Through Jungian Training which was awarded the 2024 Kristine Mann Library Research Award.
