Our elected officials can really expand the reach of our mission, and I appreciate Congressman Ami Bera taking the time to visit about issues impacting California as well as global communities, and touring our new Resnick Center for Agricultural Innovation. Thanks for sharing your goals and insight! UC Davis

The latest edition of our Highlights newsletter is out, and we’ve had a lot of cool things going on this month! Researchers are finding new uses for leftover cheese-making materials by turning them into bioplastics for things like spoons and packaging. There’s also a new study that shows why farm automation still depends on people, plus research on how heat affects redwood trees. Check out these stories, recent awards and more!

Your next plastic spoon, cup liner or packaging could be cheese based.
UC Davis researchers are working with the dairy industry on a pilot technology that converts the leftovers from processing feta, gouda, cheddar and other cheeses into compostable biodegradable plastics.

California produces 2.4 billion pounds of cheese each year and the leftovers from making your favorite feta, gouda and cheddar could be the source of compostable biodegradable plastics like packaging, spoons and cup liners. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, are working with the dai...

UC Davis researchers who studied 16 fruit tree operations found that even with farm automation, people are still needed to interpret data, troubleshoot problems and adapt technology to real-world farming conditions.

You’ve likely heard this assumption: When AI-enabled and autonomous machines arrive on the farm, jobs will disappear. But researchers at the University of California, Davis, who studied 16 fruit tree operations in California and Washington for three years, found that automation still takes human k...

California loses tens of thousands of acres of grasslands to wildfires each year, but could grazing cattle help reduce some of that risk? 🔥

A study co-authored by UC Davis researchers found that cattle can help remove vegetation that would otherwise become wildfire fuel. When researchers compared methane emissions alone, having cattle graze the vegetation resulted in lower emissions than allowing that same vegetation to burn. 🐂

Grazing isn’t a solution to wildfires, but it may be one more way cattle contribute to California’s landscape, while also supporting a sustainable food system.

Did you know invasive species entering California cost our state $3-6 billion annually?! A new initiative bringing agricultural producers and university scientists together to form the California Ag Invasive Species Initiative. This group complements other state councils to strengthen ag producer engagement. We had a very informative day at the Invasive Species Summit at the Capitol City.
