Great to attend the first American Ceramic Society Spring Meeting in Bellevue, WA last week!

Dr. Du and his PhD student Cristina López Puga were honored to receive the GOMD Varshneya Mauro Jain Guru Chela Travel Fund Award.

Our department was well represented throughout the meeting with several faculty invited talks and student presentations.

It was also great to connect with industry collaborators, alumni, colleagues and friends.

Congratulations to Dr. Rifat Hasan Rupom on completing his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering !

His research in the Nanomaterials and Devices Laboratory focused on field-effect transistor (FET) devices using 2D materials such as MoS₂ and MoTe₂ for low-power neuromorphic memory, including work in contact engineering, phase stabilization and synaptic device performance. His work also included collaborations with Intel, Tokyo Electron and Oak Ridge National Laboratory on semiconductor processing and advanced materials systems.

We congratulate Rifat on this outstanding achievement and wish him continued success in his career in advanced electronics and materials innovation.

Extreme environments demand extreme materials. 🔥

Join us for a seminar featuring Dr. William Fahrenholtz, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of ceramic engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

The seminar will explore how transition metals distribute between boride and carbide phases in high-entropy ultra-high temperature ceramics — materials designed for applications such as nuclear systems, hypersonic flight and advanced cutting tools.

Learn how thermodynamic modeling and experimental validation are shaping the future of extreme-environment ceramics.
