Can brittle materials become more adaptable? 🔬⚡

Join us for a seminar featuring Dr. Qi An, associate professor at Iowa State University. Dr. A will explore how chemical doping and light modulation can help tailor plasticity in brittle materials, including superhard ceramics and semiconductors.

His research combines computational materials science, machine learning and atomistic simulations to better understand how materials deform and fail.

Help us congratulate our graduate student David Burk on being selected for the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program!

As a SMART Scholar, David will receive full tuition and mandatory fee support for the 2026-27 academic year. He has also been assigned to the U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, as his sponsoring facility.

Congratulations to doctoral student Ali Zayaan Macknojia on being selected as a recipient of the 2026 Dorothy M. and Earl S. Hoffman Scholarship from the American Vacuum Society (AVS)!
 
This prestigious national scholarship recognizes outstanding graduate students pursuing research in areas supported by the AVS and includes a cash award, travel support and recognition at the AVS 72nd International Symposium and Exhibition in Pittsburgh this November.

The University of North Texas College of Engineering is proud to celebrate Dr. Andrey Voevodin, professor of UNT Department of Materials Science and Engineering and our Associate Dean for Research, on being named the 2026 R.F. Bunshah Award and ICMCTF Lecture Recipient by the International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films.

This prestigious honor recognizes sustained and pioneering contributions to the science and technology of coatings, thin films and surface engineering. Dr. Voevodin’s work has advanced high-performance materials for extreme environments, strengthened industry partnerships and expanded the global impact of our research enterprise. His scholarship, innovation and mentorship continue to shape the future of materials science both at UNT and across the international research community.

The R.F. Bunshah Award, presented in association with AVS - Science & Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing, is one of the field’s highest distinctions. Being selected to deliver the ICMCTF Lecture underscores the depth and influence of Dr. Voevodin’s contributions.

What if wearable technology could bend, stretch and even respond to its environment without losing its ability to communicate?

Researchers in the UNT College of Engineering are advancing the future of wearable technology through groundbreaking materials science research. With support from a $360,000 Army Research Office ( U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory) grant, Associate Professor Xiao Li from our UNT Department of Materials Science and Engineering and UNT College of Science Associate Professor Giordano Tierra are developing flexible, 4D printable materials that could enable smarter, more adaptable wearable devices for applications in healthcare, fitness and defense.
