October History Highlight 📜

In October 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) into law, amending Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Prior to its passage, employers could legally refuse to hire pregnant women, deny them promotions, or force them onto unpaid leave. The landmark legislation prohibits discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth.

On this day, October 22, 1915, Jane McCallum was elected president of the Austin Woman Suffrage Association. This pivotal leadership role launched her lifelong dedication to women's rights and civic reform. After serving this role, McCallum led statewide suffrage ratification campaigns, wrote influential newspaper columns, and ultimately served as Texas Secretary of State.

Motivation Monday 💡

Anna Julia Cooper was an intellectual, educator, writer, and advocate for the education of all, including for women and Black Americans. Born into enslavement but emancipated at age 9, Cooper went on to earn multiple degrees and became the fourth Black woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. Cooper's influential 1892 book, A Voice from the South, argued for greater opportunities, including educational opportunities, for Black women.
