October in the community 🙌

Oakton is proud to show up, celebrate our communities and build meaningful connections throughout our district. Here are a few highlights from October:

🎃 City of Des Plaines Government Harvest Hoot: Oakly joined the fall festivities to welcome families to Oakton's campus, while our CDL Program semi was a hit in the touch-a-truck area, giving kids a chance to climb behind the wheel and honk the horn!

🇭🇹 Voices of Haiti: Oakton students and representatives joined the celebration of Haitian culture and showed their support for the Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti.

🏛️ Skokie Chamber of Commerce Legislative Forum: Oakton representatives connected with elected officials and community leaders to strengthen partnerships and explore opportunities to better serve our communities.

These events remind us of the importance of showing up, building relationships and creating connections that extend beyond our campuses.

Congratulations to Oakton graduate Alyssa Laskowski on receiving the Illinois Outstanding Physical Therapist Assistant Student Award from the Illinois Physical Therapy Association!

A 2026 graduate of Oakton’s Physical Therapist Assistant program, Alyssa earned a perfect 4.0 GPA while demonstrating leadership and a commitment to compassionate patient care.

Her path to physical therapy began while working as a nursing assistant at a memory care facility. There, she saw how therapists helped patients maintain their independence and stay engaged in everyday life, inspiring her to pursue a career in the field.

"It's a really big honor to be recognized," said Alyssa. "For me, it was never about getting the 4.0. The driving factor was to learn as much as I could."

Owls in action! 🦉 Yesterday, Oakton faculty and staff spent Learning Day on our Des Plaines campus learning, connecting and getting ready for what’s ahead.

A special thank you to our keynote speaker Peter Felten for setting a tone that kept the focus on relationships and student success. From Caring Campus workshops to Higher Learning Commission 2027 preparation, the day was all about supporting our students and each other. Thank you to everyone who attended and presented!

A look back at fall on campus. 🍂 The ivy at the main entrance, the trees along the drive, and the colors by the lake and fountain are always a highlight of the season. We can’t wait for the leaves to turn and for the community to enjoy campus in full fall color. What’s your favorite spot to take in the season?

Oakly had a busy weekend! 🦉🍂

Thank you to everyone who visited Oakton College for the City of Des Plaines Government Harvest Hoot last Saturday! We loved the afternoon filled with live entertainment, family activities, food trucks and local artisan vendors. Oakly had the best time meeting so many wonderful community members including kids who climbed behind the wheel of one of our very own CDL program trucks at Touch a Truck.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor the histories, cultures and ongoing contributions of Native people, including the Bodéwadomi (Potawatomi), Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawaa (Ottawa), Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), Mamaceqtaw (Menominee), Myaamiaki (Miami), Thakiwaki (Sac and Fox) and Hoocągra (Ho-Chunk) nations, whose traditional homelands we live and work on at Oakton College every day.

We're grateful to the Native community members who shared their language and knowledge to help us represent their greetings with authenticity and respect in our new “Welcome, in Every Voice” mural at the Skokie campus. Their contributions are a meaningful reminder of the importance of honoring Indigenous languages, cultures and communities.
