Light up the night at Oakton!

The City of Des Plaines Community Fireworks Celebration returns to Oakton College on Sunday, June 28. Bring friends and family for a free night featuring a live DJ, yard games, local food trucks and a fireworks show closing with a special extended finale to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

🗓️ WHEN: Sunday, June 28
• Gates open at 7 p.m.
• Fireworks show begins at dusk (approximately 9:15 p.m.)
📍WHERE: Oakton College, Des Plaines campus
• 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines
• Enter via Golf Road
• There is no parking allowed in the lanes of grassy areas or unpaved areas on College or Circle Drives.

🌭Food truck treats and glow products will be available for purchase.
🚫 No alcohol is permitted on Oakton property.
🚫 Bringing pets to this event is strongly discouraged.

Please join us in welcoming Barry Nelson and Brian Tanenbaum to the Oakton College Educational Foundation Board of Directors.

Barry, a professor emeritus of engineering at Northwestern University, brings decades of higher education experience and a passion for STEM, mentorship and student success.

Brian brings more than 40 years of experience in business, corporate and real estate law, along with a longstanding commitment to nonprofit leadership and expanding opportunities for students.

We're grateful for Barry and Brian's dedication to Oakton students and look forward to the expertise and perspective they will bring to the Foundation!

🌈 Free Community Event: Join Oakton at Des Plaines Pride

Oakton students are invited to the 5th Annual Des Plaines Community Pride Celebration! This is a free, family-friendly event with food, activities, performances, local resources and LGBTQIA+ support organizations.

Hosted by the LGBTQIA2+ Advisory Council in partnership with Adult Education, Oakton College will have a table with free swag items, multilingual representatives and simple-English flyers.

🙌 All ages, backgrounds, and identities are welcome. We hope to see you there!

Congratulations to Oakton film instructor Michael Glover Smith on the release of his newest feature film, “Hekla”!

Written, directed and produced by Smith, “Hekla” follows a young Chicago actress as she navigates auditions, relationships and self-doubt while searching for her voice. Set and filmed entirely in Chicago, the film celebrates the city's vibrant arts community and the resilience of creative professionals.

Critic Richard Roeper called “Hekla” a "real Chicago gem"!

Oakton continues to strengthen its commitment to community engagement by supporting organizations serving our communities. College representatives recently joined community and business leaders at the Evanston Community Foundation Celebrate Evanston event, which highlights initiatives that promote leadership, collaboration and inclusion.

Oakton also sponsored the Infant Welfare Society of Evanston annual Gala in the Garden, supporting programs that benefit children and families. The event recognized Evanston GROWS for its efforts to address food insecurity. Honorees included adjunct faculty member Linnea Latimer, who serves on Evanston Grow's board of directors.
