The Oregon Acoustic Research Laboratory, a University of Oregon mass timber research and testing facility expected to open at the Port of Portland in 2027, is expected to become the first National Institute of Standards and Technology-accredited laboratory on the West Coast for acoustic testing of sound and impact transmission in large-scale mass timber floor-ceiling assemblies. This facility will strengthen Oregon’s leadership in sustainable building, housing innovation, and economic development.

During his time at the UO, Waterleaf Founder and CEO Adam DeHeer, MLA '19, conducted research and fieldwork in Peru with assistant professor Kory Russel, exploring ways to improve sanitation. As a result, Deheer created Estuary, a plant-driven greywater treatment system that reduces water usage by up to 40% by treating water from sinks, showers, and laundry for reuse.

For more than 30 years, Esther Jacobson-Tepfer, Maude I. Kerns Professor Emerita of Asian Art, has studied prehistoric rock art in Mongolia’s Altai Mountains, using petroglyphs to illuminate the lives of nomadic peoples who lived 3,000 to 12,000 years ago.

Her detailed, multidisciplinary research has challenged the normative assumptions of archaeological thinking and helped preserve Mongolia’s cultural heritage, including contributing to UNESCO recognition of Altai petroglyph sites.
