The Whitaker Center and the Office of Scholarly Innovation and Student Research (SISR) are excited to review your application for the Symposium of Undergraduate Research and Internships! The event is set for November 20, 2026.

SURIS is a great first conference! It runs with two sessions (3-4pm, 4-5pm) and takes place outside in the open hallways of the academic corridor stretching from Whitaker Hall down to Lutgert on both sides.

There is a Research Poster Workshop on November 3rd to support your presentation!

Student success is more than picking a major or visiting the career office. It’s about the whole degree.

The PAGES Program present Ned Laff and Scott Carlson, authors of Hacking College, Why the Major Doesn't Matter - and What Really Does, who will explain how students can turn the grab bag of courses and activities in their majors into a coherent field of study that supports their individual career goals. The lecture will both informative and lively.

Ned Laff has over 35 years of expertise in helping students craft successful undergraduate experiences that supported their career goals or significantly improved their chances for admissions to graduate school. Past projects include developing Columbia College's Carnegie Foundation for Civic Engagement recognition, continual recognition from the Corporation for National and Community Service with the Presidential Honors Designation, and helping Governors State University being named one of 5 colleges and universities to be recognized by the Washington Center with their 2012 Civic Engagement Award.

Scott Carlson is a Senior writer and columnist at The Chronicle of Higher Education and primarily writes about where higher education is headed, how it serves (or doesn't serve) students and the public, and how the sector can stay relevant and resilient.

We are excited to announce three FGCU Mathletes opportunities this fall!

Whether your student enjoys hands-on STEM exploration, wants to strengthen their mathematical problem-solving skills, or is ready to take on a national mathematics competition, we have something for them this semester.

🔬 EXPLORE: Pond Detectives
Exploring the Hidden World of Freshwater Life
📅 Saturday, October 3, 2026
⏰ 9:00–11:45 AM
📍 FGCU Campus
🎓 Grades 6–8, FREE – Limited to 30 students
Students will become environmental scientists for the morning! Using compound microscopes and their own pond-water samples, they will search for microorganisms, identify a mystery organism, and combine biology and math to complete hands-on scientific challenges.
The session will be led by Margaret Hood, FGCU Biology Instructor II, who brings more than 20 years of biology teaching experience and a passion for engaging middle school students in hands-on STEM experiences. She will be joined by FGCU undergraduate student mentors.

Students will work through problems from previous AMC 8 competitions, develop mathematical problem-solving strategies, and prepare for the AMC 8 Competition at FGCU in January 2027.
The workshop will be led by Kayla Kerr, an FGCU senior majoring in Software Engineering who also led our AMC 8 workshop last fall.
Two sessions each week:
Friday: 6:00–7:15 PM – Easy to Medium
Saturday: 10:00–11:15 AM – Medium to Hard
