Have you ever thought nature was trying to tell you something?

For playwright and COTA professor Maria C Cominis-Glaudini, that messenger was a snowy owl who took up residence in her Cypress neighborhood for six weeks. The owl’s visit inspired the question at the heart of Owl People: A Modern Myth: How can one bird have such an impact on humans—and what might it teach us about feeling powerless?

Tonight, that spark takes flight:

🦉 Owl People: A Modern Myth — Heightened Reading
Written by Maria Cominis
Directed by Kari Hayter
Sept. 10–12 | 8 p.m.
Grand Central Theater at Grand Central Art Center, Santa Ana
A snowy white owl arrives in an oppressed community, intertwining the lives of five neighbors, exposing divisions, unleashing chaos and awakening myths.

522 years ago today, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (aka Michelangelo) completed the statue of David, a masterwork housed in the Louvre museum.

But you do don’t need to travel all the way to Florence for a glimpse at David’s beguiling form. Right here on campus near the POLLAK LIBRARY you’ll find our “Fallen David,” comprising the remnants of a statue very similar to the real deal (besides being in 8 pieces): sculpted in Florence using the same Carrara Marble that Michaelangelo used!

The sculpture was first erected in 1967 in Forest Lawn Memorial Park’s Cypress cemetery and was later donated to CSUF after being toppled by the Whittier Narrows Earthquake in 1987.

“…This caught the attention of CSUF art professor Donald Lagerberg. He re-erected the pieces in the same arrangement in which they originally fell. This was meant to invoke ancient statues that have survived as ruins, some of which influenced Michelangelo himself.“

Pay us a visit and don’t forget to wish David a happy bday!

Edit: Location of the original David corrected to Florence, Italy.

We have created a new submission form where you can share your art and projects with us to post on social media! Submission form in CSUF Department of Visual Arts bio.

Presenting: Phong Ha! Feel free to give them a follow

“Plein air studies that were done with gouache. Almost all of these paintings were created on location, with a few exceptions that were painted from photos I took. I started plein airing for the first time this year, and the act of going outside and connecting with people has given much more meaning to my art. I learned a lot about myself and my art by going outside rather than staying inside cooped up like how I’ve been for the longest. I hope these paintings encourage others to go out to observe and maybe paint/draw from life.”

Kim’s costume artwork, “The Firebird Abstraction,” was inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s ballet, “The Firebird.” She created created the piece not in the Russian ballet’s conventional style, but in a new and intuitive way to present organic and contemporary costume art form…”
