From the athletic field to the world of fiction, Nassau Community College alumnus Alton Allen is using his talent and life experiences to tell powerful Jamaican stories.

Allen attended NCC from 1997 to 1999, helping the College win back-to-back soccer championships in 1997 and 1998. He went on to earn a degree in English literature from Stony Brook University and has since pursued another passion: writing novels.

Originally from Denham Town, Kingston, Jamaica, Allen draws on his experiences growing up in the community to tell stories that give a voice to people whose experiences are often overlooked. His debut novel, Denham Town, was published in 2023, and his second novel, The Man in the Yellow Shirt, explores the people who shape our lives and deserve more recognition.

The NEST’s Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive has officially begun!

Donations of Thanksgiving meal items and other nonperishable foods are greatly appreciated. Every donation helps The NEST provide NCC students and their families with a Thanksgiving meal and reminds them that their community is here to support them. Last year, thanks to the incredible generosity of the NCC community, The NEST was able to distribute more than 250 Thanksgiving meals to students and families in need.

The NEST is asking the community to please consider creating a basket or resuable shopping bag filled with the following items:

🔹 $25 supermarket gift card for a turkey
🔸 Boxed stuffing
🔹 Potatoes or boxed instant potatoes
🔸 Cornbread mix
🔹 Apple juice
🔸 Gravy
🔹 Cookies
🔸 Cranberry sauce
🔹 Green beans, cream of mushroom soup and fried onions (for green bean casserole)
🔸 Carton shelf-stable milk

All baskets should be delivered to The NEST (basement of North Hall) by Friday, November 13.

What an amazing day at Nassau Community College's Fall Open House! Last week, we welcomed a packed house of prospective students and their families who came to explore our campus, meet our faculty and staff, and discover all that NCC has to offer.

From our outstanding academic programs to our supportive campus community, it was exciting to see so much interest and enthusiasm for the NCC experience!

Thank you to everyone who came out and to our incredible campus community for making the day such a success. The future is bright at NCC, and we can’t wait to welcome our newest Lions! 🦁

The SUNY Reconnect program is expanding!

Starting in January 2027, free associate degrees in select high-demand programs will be available to New York State residents 25 – 55 years old, including those who already have a college degree, through SUNY Reconnect.

The SUNY Reconnect programs covers the costs of tuition and fees for eligible programs after all other financial aid is applied. Book and supply costs are also supported.

Reminder: The deadline to apply for fall graduation is Monday, October 26. 🎓

Prospective fall graduation applicants should review their degree requirements in the MyNCC student portal (under Degree Evaluation) to confirm their eligibility to graduate.

Apply online by logging into the MyNCC portal. Click “Academic” (orange icon), and then select “Apply for Graduation.” The system will prompt you with the questions related to your graduation application. Please read the prompts carefully prior to submitting your answers.

Nassau Community College alumna Stephanie Rivero is an accomplished operatic soprano who has earned acclaim as a bold new voice in opera. An alumna of the Music program at NCC, Stephanie recently earned a Master of Music degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and has performed leading and featured roles throughout the United States and Europe.

Her operatic credits include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with Camerata Bardi Academy, First Lady in Die Zauberflöte with Lyric Opera Studio Weimar, and Brigitta in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta with Russian Opera Workshop. She originated the role of Gertrud in Spencer Winell’s The Death of Schoenberg and participated in the Maria Callas Song Series with Teatro Grattacielo for two seasons. Through her dynamic performances and dedication to her craft, Stephanie continues to distinguish herself as an artist on the operatic stage.

Nassau Community College welcomed Freedom Writers founder Erin Gruwell and Original Freedom Writer Mauricio “Tony” Becerra to campus earlier this month for a series of inspiring workshops.

Through interactive discussions, they shared the power of education, storytelling and finding your voice to build understanding, overcome challenges, and create positive change.

One NCC student summed up the experience: “I felt so moved and felt seen and heard in many ways.”

The Humanities, Fine & Performing Arts Department at Nassau Community College kicks off its departmental speaker series with "Music Discovered and Recovered," an exploration of the music and stories of composers persecuted by the N**i regime.

Join pianist Dr. Jeanne Golan for a compelling presentation on these remarkable artists and their newly discovered and recovered musical treasures. Whether they were forced into exile, imprisoned, or murdered, these composers left behind extraordinary compositions that folded in every conceivable musical influence from avant-gardism and romanticism to folk, cabaret and jazz. Dr. Golan will talk about some of the composers she's found and perform selections of their work.

All members of the NCC community are invited to attend.
