Marcus Lewis ’26 didn’t know if college would be possible. Today, he’s thriving at SUNY Geneseo and earning statewide recognition. But his path to this moment began with uncertainty about whether he could afford college at all.

Geneseo's Office of Financial Aid played a key role in helping him navigate FAFSA challenges, including working through a complicated process with his parents. With the help of the staff, Lewis was able to declare financial independence. “You think their job is just FAFSA and your bill,” Lewis said, “but they work with you.”

SUNY Geneseo's master’s in reading and literacy program will be a fully online degree starting in Fall 2026. The MSEd certifies recipients to teach preschool through 12th grade.

“This change gives working professionals needed access to an advanced degree,” said Ann Monroe-Baillargeon, dean of the School of Education.

Response has been positive, said Monroe-Baillargeon. As of May, enrollment has nearly doubled from 2024.

Students in the Biodiversity and Geology of the Coral Reefs course spent part of the winter in the pool training for snorkeling and taking measurements underwater in preparation for their research trip in the Bahamas.

During spring break 2026, 15 students week examined coral and other marine features off San Salvador Island. Their goal was to better understand how hurricanes and coral-specific diseases have damaged the reef-life over time.
