Webb Institute has been designated a 2026 Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education by the U.S. U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD).

Webb is the only Center of Excellence in New York State, and the only one on Long Island joining a national network of 48 schools and training centers preparing the next generation of mariners, naval architects, and marine engineers.

For a college of roughly 105 students on Long Island, this is national recognition of something our faculty, students, and alumni have known for 130 years…Webb's model works. Every student graduates with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and two months of hands-on industry experience every single year.

This Center of Excellence designation runs for five years and opens the door to closer collaboration with MARAD on recruitment, faculty development, and facilities.

AOL just featured Webb Institute on its list of colleges with the richest graduates in the US, ranking us 23rd with a mid-career median of $146,500 and an early-career median of $85,300.

Webb Institute has been named to The Princeton Review's The Best 392 Colleges, 2027 edition - a guide that profiles only 14% of four-year colleges in the country.

The ratings we're proudest of are the ones about our faculty:
Professors Accessible - 96
Professors Interesting - 95
Academic – 93

Those scores don't come from a committee. They come from student surveys. And when students described what makes Webb different, one of them put it this way: “It is normal to see students talking with professors while waiting in line for lunch.”

Our 2026 Commencement Speaker, Rep. Tom Suozzi joined Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, and Rep. Brendan Boyle in introducing the bipartisan American Mariner Tax Fairness Act and named Webb Institute in his statement on the bill.

The legislation would extend the foreign earned income exclusion to U.S. merchant mariners who serve at least 90 days in a 12-month period aboard qualifying U.S.-flag vessels in foreign trade. It's targeted relief aimed squarely at the recruitment and retention problem: America's oceangoing U.S.-flag fleet has fallen from roughly 1,100 vessels in 1950 to fewer than 200 today, and the pool of credentialed mariners has contracted with it.

Rep. Suozzi noted that his district is home to us at the Webb Institute and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Having welcomed him to campus as our commencement speaker, we're glad to see that connection carried into the work of strengthening the maritime workforce.

Webb's mission has always been to prepare engineers who design, build, and sustain the vessels this country depends on. Policy that makes a career at sea more sustainable strengthens the entire pipeline… and the industry our graduates enter.

In one of their first courses, Professor Bradley Golden '99 challenged students to design and build paper boats using minimal supplies before putting their creations to the test in the Cuneo Courtyard fountain.

For many of them, it was the first art class they'd ever taken.
Each year in Professor Richard Harris's Western Culture II course, Webb students put down the drafting tools and pick up a brush, recreating a painting stroke by stroke. Most arrive with no formal training. What they bring instead is precision: the patience to work a problem until it resolves, the discipline to get a detail exactly right.

Applied to a canvas, that instinct does something remarkable.
The Class of 2027 took this on as underclassmen, and by some accounts turned out some of the strongest work the course has seen.
