Fall Break at Webb was an adventure to remember! Our students traded textbooks for tents and spent an unforgettable weekend in the Delaware River Valley - rafting, hiking, and sharing meals under the stars. With students from every class year joining in, it was the perfect way to build friendships and make memories outside the classroom.

That’s a wrap on the 2026 Sustainability and Innovation in Ship Design and Operations (SISDO) Conference at Webb Institute!

Over two days, maritime professionals, researchers, and experts came together to share ideas, explore emerging technologies, and discuss innovative approaches to sustainable ship design and operations. From in-person presentations at Webb to remote presentations connecting participants from afar, the conference fostered meaningful discussions on the future of the maritime industry.

Built to Build Anything.

That's the title of Webb Institute's 2026 Look Book, and it's also the shortest answer we have to the question we get most often: what can you actually do with a Webb degree?

Inside: the campus on the water, the dual degree in naval architecture and marine engineering, the Winter Work term that puts every student in the industry before they graduate, and the alumni who've taken that foundation into shipyards, design firms, the Navy, and places no one saw coming.

Ships don't start in the shipyard. They start with the people who design them.

In his latest Freight + Fortune piece, James Lightbourn makes a point we talk about every day at Webb: the conversation about U.S. shipbuilding usually focuses on how many ships we build, but the real foundation is human capital - the naval architects and marine engineers behind every hull.

The numbers are striking. The U.S. graduates roughly 450 naval architects and marine engineers a year across institutions like Webb, USMMA, and the University of Michigan. A single shipbuilding college in China graduates about the same number on its own, with thousands more coming from other Chinese universities.

Revitalizing America's maritime industrial base means investing in the engineers first. That's been Webb's mission since 1889: every student studies naval architecture and marine engineering, every student completes paid winter work terms in industry, and every student graduates ready to go to work.

Thank you to for spotlighting Webb Institute! ⛵

The Bay Area's sailing magazine caught up with two Webb alumni who've made their mark on the West Coast waterfront: yacht designer Jim Antrim ‘72 and marine engineer Paul Kamen ‘73. They overlapped at Webb, sailed together on our team, and both graduated debt-free.

Jim calls attending Webb "one of the best decisions I have ever made," pointing to the hard work, the tight-knit community, the honor code, and the Winter Work periods that put him in industry before graduation.

That formula hasn't changed. Every Webb student still receives a full-tuition scholarship, individual attention, and real-world experience in the field. And as U.S. News now gives more weight to student outcomes, Webb has returned to the Best Colleges rankings at No. 3.

A bonus for Bay Area readers: the China Cabin on the Belvedere waterfront came from a steamer built by William Henry Webb, who founded our school in 1889.

Worth the wait! After the weather postponed the Freshmen Boat Race during Family Weekend, last Friday brought beautiful conditions for our newest Webbies to take to the water… and the Webb family was there to cheer them on!

It was wonderful to see their creativity, teamwork, and engineering come to life, and watch how each boat handled the water. The big question: would their designs keep them afloat? 👀

With the Webb family cheering them on, it was a day full of excitement, laughter, and Webb pride.
