We are welcoming an award-winning alumnus back to Pirate Nation with one of his award-winning films — and you can watch it here on campus! 🎬

Join us and ECU Alumni next Wednesday, Nov. 4 for a special screening of "SHUFFLE," a SXSW Jury Award-winning documentary about addiction treatment, followed by a Q&A with two of the filmmakers. The evening will feature the film's executive producer and ECU School of Communication alumnus Justin Benoliel '02, as well as director and writer Benjamin Flaherty.

We had the most fun and meaningful day welcoming ECU Spanish and Education, and area middle/high school students to the world of dance, focusing on the performing arts, Hispanic culture and language, and education.

ECU Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences and ECU College of Education joined ECU School of Theatre and Dance to enjoy a performance, Q&A and lunchtime chat with Texas-based dance company Ballet Nepantla. The company is known for a unique artistic approach to fusing contemporary dance with Mexican folklórico. Today dancers performed "Mística," a work that celebrates Indigenous, Afro, and Hispanic roots and traditions.

Ballet Nepantla was founded by Andrea Guajardo, a Juilliard graduate and contemporary choreographer who has previously worked with ECU dancers, and joined us today! Andrea completed a guest residency with our dance majors and created a work titled "Nepantla" for our 2021 spring dance concert.

"Having my students go to festivals, I've seen it very much enrich their playing. Having this continue right here in our backyard, and to include us, is very exciting, and I hope that it stays this way for a long time to come. These are great investments in our students' education."

-John Porter, guitar instructor at Arendell Parrott Academy in Kinston + director with ECU School of Music assistant professor of guitar Chip Newton of this year's comeback ECU Guitar Festival. Porter will bring about a dozen students to this weekend's festival, where they will engage and enjoy incredible guitarists, including Dr. Elliot Frank. Porter even studied with Frank at ECU.

Frank started the first iteration of the guitar festival as a summer event, holding it for over 25 years. He retired from ECU in 2024 and will perform this year's opening concert TONIGHT.

🏆 Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Cindy Elmore

Congratulations to School of Communication journalism faculty member Dr. Cindy Elmore, recipient of a 2025–2026 Board of Governors Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award!

Presented through ECU’s annual teaching awards, the honor recognizes faculty who demonstrate exceptional teaching ability. Dr. Elmore was one of five ECU faculty members to receive the award this year.

Dr. Elmore has taught in the School of Communication for 23 years, helping prepare generations of students for careers in journalism and communication.

As she enters the next chapter of her ECU career through the university’s Phased Retirement Program, we’re proud to celebrate this well deserved recognition of her commitment to teaching and to our students. 💜💛
