The IUP Institute for Rural Health & Safety began in the early 1980s. The mission is to bring together university personnel from various disciplines and professional backgrounds to assist transportation organizations in solving problems related to traffic safety, while maintaining the values of good transportation. Applying university resources toward traffic improvement, the IUP Highway Safety Ce

nter is a liaison between university personnel and state and local officials; business, industrial, and professional interests; and other groups and individuals. The Center's program encompasses activity in five major areas:
• Research, surveys, and studies;
• Education (teaching);
• Training and conferences;
• Field and extension services; and
• Traffic safety communications and information exchange

Within these areas, the Highway Safety Center offers the following:
• Increase awareness of traffic safety issues in the counties of Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, and Jefferson;
• First-responder, emergency medical technician, paramedic, and CPR training;
• Driver improvement programs for police officers, ambulance personnel, and the public;
• Undergraduate and graduate courses in driver education;
• Industrial fire brigade and emergency response team training; and
• Driver improvement programs for private fleets.

🔥 Did you know a car can heat up by 20°F in just 10 minutes?
Even on a mild day, the inside of a vehicle acts like a greenhouse. Within an hour, interior temperatures can spike by over 40°F, reaching lethal levels for children and pets left inside. Crack a window? It doesn’t help.
Tragedies happen to loving, responsible parents, but practicing Stop, Look, Lock can save lives:
🛑 STOP: Slow down and pause before you walk away from your vehicle.
👀 LOOK: Check the back seat every single time you park.
🔒 LOCK: Always lock your car so children cannot climb inside on their own.
Life-saving tip: Keep a stuffed animal in your child's car seat. When the baby is in the seat, move the stuffed animal to your front passenger seat as a visual reminder.

A HUGE thank you to the Reynoldsville First Methodist Church for hosting our recent car seat collection event! 🚗👏 👶
Getting old, expired, or damaged car seats out of circulation is critical for child safety. Car seats have expiration dates and over time, the plastic can become brittle and prone to cracking during a crash. Furthermore, technology and safety standards constantly evolve, meaning older seats lack the advanced protection of newer models. Disposing of them properly ensures they are never accidentally reused or sold to an unsuspecting family.

Large trucks have massive blind spots—known as "No-Zones"—where your car completely disappears from view. If you can’t see the driver in their side mirrors, they can’t see you.
Stay safe with these quick tips:
🚛Don't linger: Pass quickly and safely on the left side.
🚛Give space: Avoid tailgating and cutting directly in front of a truck.
🚛Stay visible: Keep a safe following distance so the driver can see you.

Time to clear out the clutter and keep kids safe! 🚗✨Join us for our Car Seat Collection event to safely discard your old, expired, or damaged car seats. Did you know car seats expire and plastic degrades over time? Don't let an unsafe seat put a child at risk. Bring them to us, and we will handle the rest!

Ride to Work Day, on the second Tuesday in June, celebrates the joys of motorcycle riding. Commuting on two wheels is fast and fun, but staying safe is the top priority.

Whether you are a rider or a driver, let's look out for each other on the road:
🏍Gear- Wear a helmet and protective clothing.
🏍Visibility - Keep your headlights on and wear bright colors.
🏍Space - Leave extra stopping distance between vehicles.
🏍Focus -Ride defensively and stay out of blind spots.
