What happens when classroom learning meets spacecraft propulsion? In this episode of Viterbi Voices, Sophie Gettelman (Chemical Engineering ‘28) sits down with fellow students to explore the Advanced Spacecraft Propulsion and Energy Lab, or ASPEN, and the hands-on work happening inside it.

From designing and testing a Hall-effect thruster to using simulations and diagnostic tools, Emma and Mia share what it’s like to get involved in space research and engineering at USC Viterbi. They also talk about finding a welcoming community, balancing engineering with other interests, and discovering opportunities beyond the classroom. For prospective and current students, their advice is simple: ask questions, try something new, and don’t be afraid to “do it scared.” At USC Viterbi, experiences like ASPEN give students the chance to explore engineering careers, build technical skills, and find their place in the broader USC community.
