USC Marshall has appointed Kimon Drakopoulos as vice dean of AI Initiatives, a new leadership role shaping the school’s approach to AI across education, research, and industry. With experience spanning government, industry, and academia, Drakopoulos brings a track record of translating strategy into action at scale.

“USC Marshall's strength in AI is its people,” said Drakopoulos. “My focus is to bring that talent together around a common goal, grounded in rigorous research and informed by what we've learned launching the first AI for Business joint degree. USC Marshall graduates are leaders across industries worldwide, and together we will prepare the next generation to lead through the opportunities and challenges AI will bring.”

MBA alumni returned to campus to talk with the newest class of full-time MBA students about their own career pivots, lessons learned, and the relationships that helped them along the way.

“What drew me to USC, especially Marshall, was the Trojan Network,” said Darartu Mohamed ’22. “I knew that I’d be able to pivot from this very different industry into working with creators… I heard such great things about the Trojan Network and how they advocate for fellow Trojans.”

Students also spent TAM (Teamwork at Marshall) Day getting to know their new classmates through a series of friendly competitions — an early introduction to the teamwork at the core of the Marshall MBA experience.

Employees are embracing artificial intelligence to increase productivity, but many are keeping their most effective methods to themselves.

According to new research by Associate Professor Eric Anicich and PhD student Jeslyn Brouwers, approximately one-third of frequent AI users have withheld AI-related knowledge, workflows, or approaches from colleagues or employers. Much of their hesitation centered around organizational mistrust.

“What separated the sharers from the hoarders was trust in the organization,” Anicich said. Employees may fear being perceived as less competent, receiving additional work, or demonstrating how their roles could eventually be automated.

For organizations, this reluctance can limit productivity growth, hinder collaboration, and leave leadership with an incomplete picture of how work is getting done. Anicich and Brouwers argue that company policies alone are not enough to encourage knowledge sharing. Managers must create psychological safety by responding constructively, recognizing experimentation, and rewarding employees when their innovations benefit others.

“Culturally, managers need to remain curious and willing to reward productive experimentation with AI rather than treating it by default as corner-cutting or deviance,” Anicich said.

The research offers a timely lesson for business leaders: Unlocking AI’s full potential begins with building a culture in which employees feel safe sharing what they know.
