This National Foster Care Month, Merced College is proud to spotlight Rene Salazar, EOPS/NextUp Counselor and Psychology Instructor, for his dedication to supporting students with foster care experience.

With more than 20 years serving foster youth, Salazar brings empathy, mentorship, and lived understanding to his work — helping students overcome challenges, build confidence, and pursue their goals.

He believes foster youth are not defined by their past, but by their potential, and he’s proud to be part of a campus community that continues to expand resources and create meaningful support systems for students.

From counseling and teaching to advocating for innovation and student success, Salazar’s impact reflects the heart of Merced College.

During AAPI Heritage Month, Merced College proudly celebrated the stories, cultures, and contributions of employees whose journeys continue to inspire our campus community.

From overcoming barriers as immigrants and refugees, to preserving cultural identity, supporting students, and researching family history, the experiences shared by Nang Thao, Meuy Saechao, Rosalie Kekahuna, and Professor Adam Fong reflect the resilience and diversity that strengthen Merced College every day.

Their stories remind us that representation matters — and that honoring culture, family, and community helps create belonging for future generations.

Every Merced College graduate has a story — and this year, three remarkable students are inspiring our community through resilience, determination, and hope.

Maria Madrigal overcame language barriers to become bilingual while pursuing her dream of studying electrical engineering and space exploration.

D’Andre Johnson turned his life around through education, earning his electrical technician certification and building a brighter future grounded in hope and perseverance.

Rosario Damian returned to school after decades away from education, earning multiple degrees while inspiring others through faith, service, and second chances.

These Blue Devils remind us that success looks different for everyone — but with courage, support, and opportunity, dreams are possible.

The late 1970s marked the beginning of two unforgettable “Dream Years” for Merced College basketball under legendary Coach Don Reid.

The 1977-78 Blue Devils captured the program’s first-ever State Championship with a thrilling victory over Menlo College at the Long Beach Arena. Finishing 26-8, the team was led by California JC All-American and State Tournament MVP Calvin Roberts, whose leadership helped cement the Blue Devils among the state’s elite.

The following season, the 1978-79 Blue Devils delivered one of the greatest campaigns in California community college basketball history. Merced led the nation with an incredible 34-1 record and won 27 straight games on the way to another State Championship, defeating Butte College in the finals at Cal State Fullerton.

That remarkable team, led by California JC All-Americans Ed Saunders and Doug Cherry, was later honored as the No. 1 junior college basketball team in the nation — a testament to the dominance, discipline, and championship culture Coach Don Reid built at Merced College.

Coach Reid’s legacy continues to inspire generations of Blue Devils and remains one of the proudest chapters in Merced College athletics history.

Merced College showed up with spirit today as we gave the El Capitan High School baseball team a big send-off on their way to the Division 3 Championship game!

The Gauchos are in the middle of an incredible late-season run and will face top-seeded Rio Americano tonight at 6:00 PM at Sacramento City College in a winner-take-all championship matchup.

Today’s send-off was more than just cheering on a talented team — it was about supporting our community, our students, and our families. Several players have strong ties to the Merced College family, with parents who are employees here on campus.

Good luck, Gauchos — Merced College is behind you all the way!
