On Sept. 4, STU College of Law welcomed members of Florida’s legal community for Professionalism Day, providing our students with valuable insight into the responsibilities, ethics, and professionalism that shape a career in law. ⚖️

Michele Gavagni, Executive Director of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, and Randy A. Hummel, member of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, discussed the process of becoming a Florida attorney, including bar registration requirements and the importance of diligence and candor.

Reno Pierre, President of the Florida Young Lawyers Division, reminded students that their journey as legal professionals has already begun, emphasizing ethics, professionalism, and kindness.

Jordan Dresnick, member of The Florida Bar Board of Governors, closed the program with a touch of magic, using illusions and personal stories to share lessons on professional success and living a fulfilling life.

The program also recognized ASP Fellows Ashley Bolwell and Gabriela Martinez, who were selected by the students they mentored for their dedication, guidance, and commitment to supporting fellow Bobcats throughout their first year of law school. 👏

STU College of Law was honored to welcome Secretary Ken Salazar this week.

Drawing from his distinguished career in law, government, and diplomacy, Secretary Salazar shared reflections on faith, leadership, law, and public service, as well as insights from his newly released book, Borderlands: My Fight for an Inclusive America.

The conversation provided our students with a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from a leader whose career has included service as Colorado Attorney General, U.S. Senator, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.

STU College of Law hosted the first of two Experiential Learning Information Sessions, giving students an inside look at the clinics, externships, and hands-on learning opportunities available throughout their law school journey.

Students heard from Dean Tarlika Nunez-Navarro, Assistant Dean Ana Vallejo, and clinic directors Professor Leticia Mora, Professor Carmen E. Atkins, and Professor Daniel Munce, who shared insight into STU Law’s Appellate Litigation, Immigration, and Tax Clinics.

Alumna and Experiential Learning Ambassador Xiomara Garcia (’26), along with student ambassadors J’Anna Thomas-Bennett (2L) and Elizabeth Ruiz (3L), also shared their firsthand experiences and the value of experiential learning in preparing for their legal careers.

Congratulations to Professor Mark Blankenship on the forthcoming publication of “Franklin Writes a Law Review Article on the Intellectual Property Implications of Rage Bait” in the Georgia Journal of Law & Technology!

This innovative article examines the emerging phenomenon of “rage bait,” content deliberately designed to provoke outrage and maximize engagement in today’s attention-driven economy.

Professor Blankenship explores how recognizable intellectual property can be repurposed to generate controversy, attention, and algorithmic amplification, creating reputational and market harms that existing copyright doctrine does not always adequately address.

The article proposes a five-factor “deliberate exploitation test” within the fair use analysis to provide courts with a more structured method for evaluating whether a secondary user’s asserted transformative purpose instead reflects the deliberate exploitation of a copyrighted work’s goodwill, cultural reputation, or anticipated controversy.

Congratulations to third-year law student Caroline Ronveaux, whose article, "Who Speaks for the Everglades? Authority in the Post-Chevron Era," will be published in the Arizona Journal of Environmental Law & Policy in the Spring 2027 issue.

The collapse of Chevron deference has sharpened a question environmental law has long deferred: who has the legitimate authority to speak for nature? Using the Everglades, the beloved river of grass, as its central case study, the article examines expanded participation, guardianship, and ecosystem personhood as competing models of ecological voice.

It ultimately argues that environmental law must move beyond treating ecosystems solely as objects of regulation and develop institutional structures that integrate ecological knowledge, continuity, and responsibility into legal decision-making.
