Meet Elly, one of our wonderful interns who’s been part of the FoodRight team this semester!

👇 Learn a little more right from Elly:
"Hi, I'm Elly! I'm currently a master's student in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where I also earned my undergraduate degree in Nutritional Sciences!

I'm originally from Minnesota, but I've loved getting to know Milwaukee and its community. I'm excited to be part of the FoodRight team for my community nutrition field placement! I've especially enjoyed working with the Good School Food Ambassador program, connecting with parents and caregivers, and gaining firsthand experience in community-based nutrition education.

As an aspiring registered dietitian, I'm passionate about making nutrition education accessible and helping people build healthy, sustainable habits. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn from the FoodRight team and experience the impact of their programs firsthand!"

A nutritious meal. A welcoming smile. Both can make a difference. 💛

During her field experience with NourishMKE, Zilber College MPH in Nutrition and Dietetics student Mariela Pina planned and led a cooking demonstration using pantry ingredients. But a participant’s words became her most memorable takeaway:

“Thank you for smiling at us. We appreciate the food, but not many people smile at us, and sometimes that is more valuable than the food itself.”

Join the Zilber College of Public Health Seminar Series on Oct. 29 for “From Data to Action: Building a Healthier Milwaukee County,” presented by Ben Weston, MD, MPH, FAEMS, Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Chief Medical Director for the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management.

This seminar will explore how public health data can be translated into action to improve health across Milwaukee County—and how cross-sector partnerships can help turn information into meaningful community impact.

Student voices can help create safer campuses.

Zilber College faculty member Rose Hennessy Garza recently joined Wisconsin Public Radio to discuss campus sexual violence prevention—and the role students can play in driving change.

Her research focuses on helping colleges put evidence-based prevention strategies into practice, with approaches that reflect students’ different needs and experiences.

As Body Acceptance Week approaches, new pilot research from Zilber College faculty member Christy Greenleaf, PhD, explores a different way to think about physical activity — focusing less on how the body looks and more on how it feels, functions and allows us to experience the world.

Presented with undergraduate public health student Jordan Koeller and master’s kinesiology student Alexa Newhouse, the research found that students often described movement in terms of connection, capability, self-care and appreciation for what their bodies can do.

Kelsi Faust and Renee Scampini Honored at UWM Employee Excellence Awards

Two members of the Zilber College of Public Health community were recognized at UWM’s Employee Excellence Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Union Ballroom.

Dr. Kelsi Faust received the Advisor of the Year Award, and Dr. Renee Scampini received the Outstanding Staff Undergraduate Teaching Award. These honors celebrate their dedication to supporting students through advising and teaching.

Join the Zilber College of Public Health Seminar Series on Oct. 22 for a presentation by Christopher J. Simenz, PhD, MS, Director of the Master of Public Health Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Using Milwaukee data, interactive activities and real-world examples, Simenz will explore how where people live, work and learn can shape health and life expectancy. He’ll also introduce the social and economic factors that drive health inequities and highlight public health careers working “upstream” to address them.
