Lead poisoning remains a serious public health challenge in Milwaukee — especially for young children. Join the Zilber College of Public Health Seminar Series on Sept. 10 to learn how one local organization has spent three decades working to change that.

Katy Murphy, MS, RD, and Claudia Albarado of Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers will present “Lead Outreach Program: 30 Years of Lead Poisoning Prevention.” They’ll explore the history of lead in Milwaukee, innovative approaches used to reduce lead poisoning on the city’s near south side, and the successes and challenges that remain today.

What happens to your heart, muscles and balance when you move? 🫀💪

Children at the UWM Children’s Learning Center got to find out firsthand when they became “Body Scientists” during a Movement & Body Science workshop led by Zilber College Kinesiology faculty and students.

Through hands-on activities at Heart Helpers, Muscle Movers and Balance Builders stations, children explored how their bodies work while discovering that movement can be both fun and educational.

The experience also gave Kinesiology students Isabella Hart, Eilleen Tocco and Malik Sharqawi Akram Sharqawi the opportunity to put their classroom learning into practice while working with young learners.

One year after historic flooding hit Milwaukee, Zilber College public health student Aziz Abdullah is reflecting on the community response — and the work that continues today.

Abdullah, a student in UWM’s Accelerated MPH in Community Health Equity Promotion track, helped lead neighborhood cleanup efforts after the floods and has continued creating opportunities for young people to serve, work and build stronger communities.

His story is a powerful example of public health in action — responding to immediate needs while building long-term community resilience.

What does water quality research have to do with a triathlon? Quite a lot when thousands of athletes are swimming in Lake Michigan! 🌊

Todd Miller, associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the UWM Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health, teamed up with USA Triathlon to monitor Lake Michigan water temperatures for its 2026 Milwaukee event.

Using a solar-powered “Panther buoy” developed by Miller and his students, organizers and athletes could access real-time temperature data leading up to the competition — valuable information in a Great Lake where conditions can change quickly.

WUWM recently featured Miller and the innovative way his environmental health research is helping support athlete safety right here in Milwaukee.

Wildfire smoke is becoming an increasingly familiar part of summer in Wisconsin — and its health effects can extend far beyond irritated eyes and lungs.

Amy Kalkbrenner, professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the UWM Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health, recently spoke with Door County Knock about the health risks associated with wildfire smoke and poor air quality.

Kalkbrenner explains why fine particulate matter in wildfire smoke can be especially harmful, who may be most vulnerable, and why communities need to be prepared as smoke events become more common.
