A lifelong runner, Dr. Jim Richie recently celebrated his 62,000th career mile over 50 years of running.

For the associate professor of electrical engineering, the milestone can be measured in many ways: 2.5 times around the Earth, over a quarter of the way to the moon or about 90 pairs of running shoes. The distance is impressive, but it’s Richie’s lasting presence at Marquette that makes all the difference.

For the past 38 years, Richie has taught 170 courses to over 1,200 engineering students, by his estimation. But, running and teaching have never been numbers games for Richie. He revels in what each step has to offer.

This past semester, the Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering hosted their second annual Research Day to celebrate research and innovation among biomedical engineering students.

The event featured a keynote address from Dr. Joseph Avila, grad ’21, senior analysis engineer, occupant protection at Tesla; a research poster session; student presentations and a panel Q&A with alumni postdocs.

This showcase of student curiosity, teamwork and hands-on experience represents the difference our Joint Department offers for the next generation of biomedical engineering leaders.

Congratulations to Dr. Patrick McNamara, professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering, for receiving a Marquette University Way Klingler Fellowship!

Way Klingler Fellowships are intended to advance research and scholarship among faculty and are made possible through the generosity of Helen Way Klingler.

McNamara’s research examines how everyday human activities shape water and wastewater treatment systems that protect public health. Supported by the Way Klingler Fellowship, McNamara is advancing a rare, large scale study in southeastern Wisconsin that allows researchers to measure how a wastewater treatment plant affects antibiotic resistance levels in a receiving river before and after treated wastewater discharge began. This natural experiment provides an unprecedented opportunity to quantify the real world impact of wastewater treatment on antimicrobial resistance and to inform future water quality regulation and infrastructure design.

Just before the close of the semester, the Marquette community gathered at Broken Bat Brewery for the official release party of student brewed work from our “Brewing Technology and Entrepreneurship” course.

The course explores the technical and entrepreneurial skills needed to run a microbrewery, guided by Milwaukee’s historic and cutting-edge expertise in a global industry. At the release party, students presented their final branding and brewing to an audience of family and friends, complete with sampling and live music from a Marquette student/alumni band.

Special thanks to Broken Bat Brewery and Gathering Place Brewing Company for their collaboration on this outstanding course and capstone event.
