Standing on the eastern shore of Manhattan Island, on the banks of New York City’s East River, United Nations Headquarters remains both a symbol of peace and a beacon of hope. To its 18 acres come representatives of the earth’s seven billion people, to discuss and decide issues of peace, justice and economic and social well being.

Care makes everyday life possible. Looking after children, supporting older people and assisting people who need care are essential contributions to our communities. That work deserves recognition, support and fair opportunities.

On the International Day of Care and Support, we reflect on how inclusive care systems connect with human rights, gender equality and decent work.
These connections are part of the wider story of the Sustainable Development Goals. Teach the UN offers resources to explore that story with learners of different ages.

What would better support for care look like in your community?

“Have you ever met any famous people?” “How do you handle difficult political stances?” “How has AI impacted the workplace?” UNIS students had plenty to ask our UN tour guides!

This month, our team joined high school students at the United Nations International School for “A Day in the Life of a UN Tour Guide.”

The conversation explored our work at Visitors Services, recent UN developments and career opportunities at the United Nations. Students also learned about Guided Tours and Teach the UN, ways to connect with the Organization and learn more about its work.

Thank you to the students for their curiosity and thoughtful questions!

A striking image or a confident headline can travel far. Understanding the source matters, too.

During Global Media and Information Literacy Week, 24–31 October, try three useful questions: who created this information, when was it published, and what evidence supports it?

For a closer look at the work of the United Nations, start with UN News and the primary resources linked through Teach the UN, including UN Web TV, UN Photo and the UN Audiovisual Library.

Educators can use these resources to connect classroom conversations with original material and help students ask informed questions.

What does disarmament mean beyond a headline?

During Disarmament Week, 24–30 October, we reflect on efforts to reduce the dangers posed by weapons and build a more secure world.

At United Nations Headquarters, a guided tour introduces the Organization’s history and work. Continue exploring peace and security through Teach the UN, which links to UN resources.

A visit can turn a word you hear in the news into a subject you understand more clearly.

Before the familiar skyline, there were drawings, models and a building site.

On World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, explore “UN Headquarters: A Workshop for Peace,” a virtual exhibition that brings the history of the UN’s home into view.

Archive material traces construction from 1949 to 1952 and the major renovation from 2008 to 2014. These records preserve more than a building’s appearance: they show how an idea for international cooperation became a place people could enter.

Look back online, then see the living Headquarters on a weekday guided tour.

“We the peoples of the United Nations…”

Today, 🇺🇳, marks 81 years since the UN Charter entered into force on 24 October 1945.

Its opening words remind us who the Organization serves. Its purposes include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights and working together to address shared challenges.

At United Nations Headquarters, our tour guides introduce visitors from around the world to that history and the work it continues to shape.

Different faces. A shared principle.

On 21 October 1985, the United States presented the “Golden Rule” mosaic to the United Nations for the Organization’s 40th anniversary. Today marks 41 years since that gift.

Based on a painting by Norman Rockwell and made with Murano glass, the mosaic brings together people of different cultures and faiths around a message of mutual respect.

A window that asks us to look beyond ourselves.

Discover Marc Chagall’s “Peace Window,” a stained-glass memorial at United Nations Headquarters.

Unveiled in 1964 in memory of Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld and the 15 others who died with him, the work brings together images of children, flowers and music in an expression of and .

Its blues reward a closer look. At the UN, art can hold both remembrance and hope and offer another way into the Organization’s story.
