Georgetown Black Alumni Council

The Black Alumni Council (BAC) is the officially recognized affinity organization and shared interest group within the Georgetown University Alumni Association that supports and engages current and future generations of Black Georgetown alumni. The mission of the Georgetown University Alumni Association Black Alumni Council is to serve as the primary vehicle for the inclusion, engagement, and connectivity of Black alumni across the Georgetown University community; foster relations between Black alumni and Black students, faculty and staff; and to facilitate outreach from the university to the broader community.

This Wednesday, we recognize Jerome “Junkyard Dog” Williams (C’96), a DMV native whose unconventional path to Georgetown led him from Montgomery College to the Hilltop, where he became a standout student-athlete and member of a nationally ranked basketball team. While basketball opened the door, Jerome’s Georgetown experience was about much more than what happened on the court.

As a Black student at Georgetown, Jerome found community through the Black Student Union and learned to appreciate the history and legacy of the university in ways that continued to shape him long after graduation. Despite the demands of being a Division I athlete, he remained focused on his academics, earning a place on the Dean’s List and graduating with a degree in sociology and a minor in theology.

Today, Jerome encourages Black students to build relationships with their fellow students and Black alumni, emphasizing the lifelong power of the Georgetown community. “You can't imagine what Georgetown will do for you,” he shares. His story is a reminder that being a Hoya is about more than a degree. It is about the connections you build, the community you carry with you, and the legacy you become part of.

The reception serves as the first activation point for the weekend’s ‘stitches.’ The reception will feature a panel of young alumni sharing their journeys to, through, and beyond Georgetown, and their experiences navigating life after graduation. This Wednesday, we highlight Ruth Morgan (H’27), a healthcare management and policy student whose Georgetown journey is rooted in education, community, and a commitment to creating greater opportunities for those who come after her. Raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Ruth grew up in a Jamaican family that emphasized education as something no one could ever take away from you. She found her way to Georgetown through Upward Bound and knew almost immediately that the Hilltop was where she belonged.

At Georgetown, Ruth has embraced an education that goes beyond the classroom. Her studies in healthcare management and policy have challenged her to think critically about the systems that shape healthcare, while her experiences as a Black student have deepened her understanding of identity, resilience, and community. Reflecting on what it means to be Black at Georgetown, she describes the experience as both a testament to resilience and a reminder of the work that still remains.

Ruth’s story is ultimately about using opportunity to create opportunity. She believes Black students deserve to be here, deserve to succeed, and deserve to leave Georgetown equipped to serve their communities and open doors for those who follow. Her journey reminds us that being part of Black Georgetown is not only about overcoming barriers, but about redefining what is possible and building a stronger path for the next generation.
