For my last takeover post, I’ll be talking about how I used communication theory to build a working C-3PO-inspired AI system.

This project started in my Communication Theory Class with Professor Mark Hopsin, where I wrote a paper called When Machines Become Social. In that class, I began exploring why people sometimes respond to technology as if it has a social presence.

That idea became the foundation for Threepio.
The School of Communication helped me see that communication is not just about speeches, papers, or presentations. It is also about how people make meaning, form connections, and experience the world around them, including interactions with new technology.

My goal was to create something that not only resembled the character from Star Wars, but to explore how responsiveness, context, personality, and physical presence can shape the way we experience this new technology.

Threepio combines speech recognition, a language model, voice synthesis, audio processing, LEDs, a Raspberry Pi (which is a type of computer chip board), and a physical C-3PO-inspired head. Classes I had taken previously at helped provide me with some of the technical skills I was going to need, like coding.

This project was a way for me to bridge my learning experience in communication theory, engineering and software development, design, and storytelling.
The full paper, build notes, and source code are available in my Threepio GitHub repo which I show the address to at the end of the video.

What you learn in class does not have to stay on the page. Sometimes, it becomes the thing you build next.

One of the most meaningful parts of my Chapman experience has been helping build .

One day after class, my friend Malachi came up to me with an idea for a new club. We barely knew each other, but he had seen me give presentations and basically said, “You should be in sales”.

He was right. I did a health tech sales internship last summer, which highlighted how much sales and communication have in common.

Being on the executive board has given me the chance to help create a space where students can learn from professionals that are already established in their careers.

I still have a lot to learn, but Sales Club has reminded me that growth usually starts by putting yourself around people who are willing to show up, try, and get better together. Teamwork makes the dream work!
