Tis the season for Creepers and Crawlers!!
One of our students found this one while cleaning up around Clairmont Hall. With a little bit of research, this praying mantis was identified as a European Mantis, Mantis religiosa.
Did you know a European Mantis can rotate its head a full 180 degrees and look directly over its shoulder?!?! ..Maybe we'll name her Regan 😉😂

Organic Farming Fall Practicum students learned how to broadcast cover crop seed. Here they are learning how to use a belly grinder as well as the normal bucket method to broadcast a triticale and field pea mix. 👨‍🌾
What is a cover crop? Cover crops act as a natural fertilizer by pulling nitrogen out of the air and pumping it straight into the dirt through their roots.
Biological Nitrogen Fixation is a fantastic way for organic farmers to naturally enrich the soil! 🌱🌧️🌾

Hands On Learning!!
Plant Health Care Practicum used air excavation tools to amend soil with the Arbor Ascent team, and got busy mulching and pruning in the Arboretum. 🧤🪚
Student gained experience with science-based, preservation-focused tree care.🌳👩‍🌾

Thank You Horticulture Club!!
Hort Club, funded by our annual plant sale, helps support student learning in many ways, including by providing snacks. 🥨🍇
Last spring during the EYES survey report out, we heard a lot about student hunger and how important these snack baskets around campus were to overall student well being and combatting food insecurity. 🫶🍎💚

CCC Food Harvest students had a full harvest day for our fall Community Support Agriculture program. They got muddy and wet in the field bringing in crops for washing and packing into our CSA boxes. Rain or Shine, Farmers in Action!!🫛🥕🍠

2026 Summer term has officially come to an end! 🎉

We’re proud of all our horticulture students for all the hard work, learning, cultivating, and harvesting they’ve accomplished this summer!
Now it’s time to enjoy a well-deserved break! 🌻😎🥤🌳

Tomatoes!!!! 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅
We trellis our tomatoes into double leaders to increase yield and manage disease and plant basil around them. Peppers are to the left in the picture, and they were basket weaved this year. We have found this keeps the plants upright more and makes it easier to harvest, w**d, and care for them.
