We were excited to meet with prospective students from both high schools and community colleges at Explore CPP Day this past Saturday!

We had a college booth on the University Quad, which included students and faculty who were there to answer questions. In addition, our fashion design technology and management students made t-shirts that were for sale.

Our three alpacas were also there to greet visitors, while the apiary had a booth nearby where visitors could purchase honey and other products.

For the past two weeks, students enrolled in NTR 3450A: Nutrition Counseling and Education Activity, a PolyX course taught by Associate Professor Kellene Isom, Assistant Professor Abigail Clarke, and Lecturer Sangeeta Shrivastava demonstrated what it means to learn and become by doing.

After eight weeks of intensive planning and preparation, the students provided nutrition education to mainly elementary school students from the Pomona and Rialto school districts. More than 500 children, along with their teachers and parents, participated in interactive activities focused on the basic principles of nutrition and physical activity.

The lessons included selecting healthy foods from the USDA’s five food groups, reading food labels, learning about the importance of legumes and how to grow them, budgeting, selecting healthy beverages, and choosing foods that support brain development and physical activity.

To engage the children, the nutrition students incorporated familiar and age-appropriate themes, including Halloween, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, superheroes, eating foods across the rainbow, food-label detectives, the Beanstalk, and brain villains. The children participated in a variety of interactive activities: they earned prizes by answering nutrition questions, went grocery shopping with play money, exercised with Spiderman and Captain Marvel, had their faces painted, took photos with nutrition-themed props, and received planting kits with instructions for growing their own legumes.

The schoolchildren were given stickers, pencils, pocket-sized magnifying glasses, and educational materials. One of the educational handouts was also translated into Spanish and reviewed by Lecturer Stephanie Serpas Jacobo to ensure accuracy and clarity.

For the nutrition students, the experience was equally rewarding. They learned how to plan and conduct nutrition education sessions, taking important steps toward becoming competent nutrition educators.

Our congratulations to Danny Andrews and John Resich!

Andrews ('90, food marketing and agribusiness management) is our 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. He owns a Bakersfield company that grows and ships fresh fruits and vegetables. [pictured with Dean Ethan Orr]

Resich ('69, finance, real estate, and law) was presented with the LIfetime Achievement Award. Although he did not graduate from our college, as a rancher, lawyer, and entrepreneur, he has been a longtime supporter of ours.

The pair were honored at the Cal Poly Pomona alumni gala on Oct. 16 at the Pacific Palms Resort in Industry.

To learn more about Andrews and Resich, see the videos at https://www.cpp.edu/agri/links.shtml (IG users click on the link in our bio).

ICYMI, last weekend saw the return of the Insect Festival at PumpkinFest.

Our thanks go to our Department of Plant Science, who organized this event.

The event featured live and preserved insects, as well as honey, beeswax products, and other items to purchase.

The college had not held an insect-related event since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Take a look behind the scenes at a recent photo and video shoot at the Department of Apparel Merchandising and Management in Building 45.

When you think of the department, you may think of students working with sewing machines.

But today’s fashion design technology and management program (the new name for the apparel merchandising and management major) goes far beyond mere needle and thread.

Our students can get hands-on learning experiences with digital design work, garment printing, and laser-cutting tools, as well as retail merchandising.

As the college application period hits its peak, Cal Poly Pomona will use photos and video from the shoot to highlight the program’s usage of technology and machinery in promotional efforts to prospective students.
