The Archive Project's (JAPA 375) trip to the Met! Dr. John Carpenter (Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese Art) invited the class into the storerooms of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where students viewed over 100-year-old woodblock prints by Adachi Ginkō and Yōshū Chikanobu. Dr. Carpenter also took time to guide students through the Met's Japanese galleries, commenting on each display in great detail.

Thank you to Dr. Carpenter for providing Vassar students with such an amazing opportunity to see the inner workings of the Met!

Along with Professor Pier Carlo Tommasi, Loeb Collections and Registrarial Fellow Betsy Subiros (Class of '25) joined students on the trip.

Professor Roberta Strippoli will take us on a journey across Japanese history, exploring the interplay of literature, gender, and cultural heritage by tracing a famous episode from The Tale of the Heike, Japan’s most celebrated medieval epic, and its many afterlives.

Museums can sometimes feel just beyond reach. But what happens when we bring the collection into the classroom and use it to bring a campus community closer together?

Exciting news! Our very own Prof. Tommasi and his Ford Scholar, Hodaka Maeda ’28, were just featured in Vassar News! This past summer, they worked together on a project titled “Self-Archiving in 16th-Century Japan: A Comparative Study of Warrior Diaries.” Check out this article to learn more about their project and the Ford Scholars initiative.
