Meet Dr. Rayanna A. Schnarr, a recent graduate of Alliant University San Diego’s Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology program! 🎓✨

“I got into the field of psychology because I believe in the power of healing through relationships, and I’m happy to build healing relationships as a profession,” says Dr. Schnarr.

“Now that I’m back in San Diego, I will be starting my postdoctoral fellowship at Positive Change Counseling Center, providing psychological assessments in the San Diego area.”

“My advice for future or prospective students would be to stay open to learning and experience. In the field of psychology, there are so many stories and lives that we have the honor of witnessing. As much as our clients can learn from us, we can learn from them. In that way, each relationship is reciprocal and makes us better psychologists.”

After decades of advocacy, Hawaii becomes the ninth state to authorize prescribing psychologists. 🌺

In this episode of Psychopharmacology Today, Dr. George Kapalka, Alliant MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology Program Director, talks with Dr. Judi Steinman and Dr. Jim Phelps about what Hawaii's three-year pilot program means for patients, providers, and communities. The pilot focuses on federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) on Kauai and Hawaii Island, where access to psychiatric prescribers is especially limited.

You'll hear how prescribing psychologists could help ease the mental health workforce shortage and support primary care providers, who are increasingly asked to manage psychotropic medications. The trio also explain why psychological assessment, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology training belong together, especially for complex presentations like bipolar disorder that can be missed when antidepressants become the default. They also discuss where Hawaii's pilot still falls short, including its current age restrictions and the need to expand access for children and older adults.
