School of International Service, AU has established a memorial fund to honor Sarah Milgrim, SIS/MA ’23, on the one-year anniversary of her death in an act of antisemitic violence.

The fund celebrates Milgrim’s passion for global conflict resolution and environmental justice by providing crucial financial support to graduate students dedicated to building peace and bridging cultural divides.

One year after Sarah Milgrim was killed in an antisemitic attack in Washington, DC, SIS honors the alumna whose dedication to peacebuilding and environmental justice lives on through a newly established memorial fund.

At the inaugural AU on the Hill Day on May 20, 100 alumni and students working as congressional staffers and interns celebrated AU’s roots in public service. The event featured remarks from Rep. James McGovern (D-MA), CAS/BA ’81, SPA/MPA ’84—one of six Eagles serving in the House—who reflected on how his AU professors inspired his path to congressional leadership.

Today, American University announces that President Jonathan Alger will step down on June 30, 2026, as he prepares to become the inaugural America 250 Fellow, a joint appointment with the American Council on Education (ACE) and the American Association of Colleges and Universities(AAC&U). David Marchick, dean of the Kogod School of Business (American University), will serve as interim president beginning July 1, 2026.

The AU community is grateful for President Alger’s leadership and looks ahead with confidence as Dean Marchick leads the university forward, building on the momentum of Meet Our Moment and AU’s mission to prepare students lives and careers of meaning and purpose.
