Big issues. Straight talk. No nonsense.

Last Thursday we held our first Beyond the Bull day, bringing together three guest speakers to explore some of the big issues shaping the future of Australian agriculture.

Ben Grice (AG12) from LAWD shared his outlook on agricultural land values and the factors influencing the market. James Fell from ABARES explored global conflict, food security and what these mean for Australian farmers and trade. Julian Moore rounded out the day with a session on artificial intelligence and its implications for agriculture.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to hear a range of perspectives and consider how these issues could shape their future businesses and careers.

A late night in Amsterdam and an early start at Marcus!

Thank you to Stephen Corlett, who stayed up late to join our first year Agribusiness students online this morning as part of their Agribusiness Marketing studies.

Stephen brings 25 years of experience in branding and creativity, having worked with global brands including Nike, Coca-Cola, adidas and PlayStation.

We appreciate Stephen making time across the time zones to share his experience with our students.

It was fantastic to welcome Clancy Mackay (AG23) back to the College for a talk before classes yesterday!

Clancy runs Dust Devil Stockhandling with Peter Lord, and a conversation over dinner the night before turned into an opportunity for the pair to share their experiences with a keen group of students before the day had even started.

Just three years after graduating, Clancy had a valuable message to share: back yourself, step outside your comfort zone and trust the process. Whether you win or lose, there is always something to learn.

Thank you, Clancy and Pete, for giving up your time. It was great to hear what you’ve been doing and the lessons you’ve learnt along the way!

Earlier this month, staff gathered for a special morning tea in the Ivo Dean Dining Room to celebrate Sonia Walker’s 10 years at Marcus Oldham.

A friendly face in our Catering and Accommodation team, Sonia helps make campus feel like home for students.

“It’s rewarding to know that a friendly face, a good meal and a warm welcome can make a difference to their day,” Sonia said.

At 6 pm tonight, 19 Marcus Oldham students began the Shaka Project’s 24 hour run at Deakin University, raising funds for workshops that encourage conversations about mental health.

Across five teams, they’ll keep at least one member from each team on the 1 km track at all times, right through the night until 6 pm tomorrow.

Well done to everyone taking part for committing their time and energy to an important cause. If you’re nearby, head down to Deakin to cheer them on!

Yesterday, our students and staff came together at the Social Hub to remember and celebrate the life of Hannah Campbell and her contribution to College life with the unveiling of “Hans Hut”.

It was a beautiful afternoon of shared memories, reflecting on the impact Hannah had on her classmates, staff and the wider College community.

Thank you, Hannah, for the friendship and warmth you brought to College life. You will always be part of our community.

Marcus Oldham brought home the Intercollegiate Ag Games shield last Friday after welcoming students from Longerenong, Melbourne Uni and La Trobe to Geelong for InterCol.

The Marcus football team proved dominant, winning every game, with standout performances from Will Liston, Declan Philips, Jock Triggs and Tom Gibson. Marcus also went undefeated in the women’s and mixed netball, with some close contests, including one that went into overtime.

Thank you to Modewarre Cricket Club for hosting us and providing excellent facilities, and to everyone involved in organising the day.

Congratulations to our students on a great result, and thank you to everyone who took part.

Earlier this month, our final year Agribusiness students visited NAB’s Melbourne headquarters to explore the connections between agriculture, banking and financial markets.

The day included a tour of the markets floor with Dan Norman, an agricultural economic update, a session with GoFARM Chief Operating Officer Matt Adams on agricultural investment, and a discussion on green finance with James Bentley, Director of Sustainable Lending at NAB.

Thank you to Dan and everyone involved at NAB, along with the guest presenters, for sharing their time and expertise with our students.

Thank you to Raymond du Plessis, Senior Poultry Nutritionist at Ridley Corporation, for spending a day with our final year Agriculture and first year Agribusiness students exploring monogastric nutrition last week.

It was a fascinating session and a valuable opportunity for students to learn from Raymond’s industry experience and expertise.

We appreciate Raymond taking the time to visit Marcus Oldham and share his knowledge with our students.

Artificial Intelligence is already changing the way agricultural businesses operate, but where are the practical opportunities for producers and agribusinesses today?
