Today is All Souls’ Day. We remember those who have gone before us and pray for them.

“Joined to the merits of the saints, our fraternal prayer comes to the aid of those who await the beatific vision…It is an expression of the fraternal charity of the one family of God… For the souls in purgatory, waiting for eternal happiness and for meeting the Beloved is a source of suffering, because of the punishment due to sin which separates them from God. But there is also the certitude that once the time of purification is over, the soul will go to meet the One it desires (cf. Ps 42; 62).”

Excerpt from Pope John Paul II’s Message for Millenium of All Souls’ Day.

Today is All Saints’ Day.

“This multitude not only includes the officially recognized Saints, but the baptized of every epoch and nation who sought to carry out the divine will faithfully and lovingly. We are unacquainted with the faces and even the names of many of them, but with the eyes of faith we see them shine in God's firmament like glorious stars…

This, then, is the meaning of today's Solemnity: looking at the shining example of the Saints to reawaken within us the great longing to be like them; happy to live near God, in his light, in the great family of God's friends. Being a Saint means living close to God, to live in his family. And this is the vocation of us all, vigorously reaffirmed by the Second Vatican Council and solemnly proposed today for our attention.”

Today is All Hallows’ Eve, which refers to the evening vigil before All Saints’ Day. All Hallows, you might have guessed it, refers to all holy or sanctified ones who are now saints in heaven, known and unknown.

Various traditions have long developed around All Hallows’ Eve or Halloween, like wearing macabre costumes or trick-or-treating, but unmoored to the religious intent of the day, these and other practises often obscure and even replace the day’s meaning for many.

Let us give thanks to God for the holy men and women we’ve known, who’ve gone to their eternal reward leaving us good example and increased yearning for heaven.

May they pray for us!

Today is International Day of Care and Support,
established in 2023 to recognise the invaluable work of people who care and support others, whether paid or unpaid. By shining a spotlight on the role of care and compassion in society, the day aims to help nurture a culture of care and to contribute to government initiatives that aid healthcare policies.

Today is the feast of the Apostles, Sts. Simon and Jude. Little is known of them, yet the scriptures indicate they had the privilege of being the first cousins of the Lord Jesus. Jude has an epistle in the New Testament and Tradition holds they preached together in Mesopotamia and Persia before suffering martyrdom.

“How then can we justify ending the lives of the unborn, whatever the reason given? Do we not have the means to support the least among us and their mothers? And with the sick and the terminally ill, don’t we have the means to support them fully with love, compassion and medical care, to the end?” – Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli.

Today is the feast of Pope St John Paul II. With his university studies disrupted by the onset of World War II, the young Karol Wojtyla discerned and secretly pursued the call to priesthood while working in a quarry; then a chemical factory. Ordained a priest in 1946, St John Paul II would become a professor of moral theology and ethics, a bishop, a contributor to the Second Vatican Council and, after being made a Cardinal while in his 40s, was elected Pope in 1978, aged 58. His papacy was immense and memorable, if not for his travels, then for his writings, which effectively steadied the ship of the Church and inspired a new generation of Catholics. He is beloved by many across the world and is credited with playing an important role in the fall of atheistic communism across eastern Europe, nearly forty years ago.
