Last Wednesday Year 11 and 12 students undertaking a Certificate II and III in Dance had their VET Dance Showcase where they performed for friends and family in the Dedrie Baksh Auditorium at NCAT. Over 12 incredible performances, students flexed their skills across a range of genres. Well done everybody!

On Tuesday Year 10 Theatre Studies students performed a play titled ‘Sinners Confession’ to a captive audience of fellow students and teachers.

The play was written by students which portrayed the seven deadly sins and the way in which we all contribute to the effects of climate change.

The class will perform ‘Sinners Confession’ at the Malthouse Theatre tomorrow as part of the Suitcase Series, an award-winning participatory theatre and education program for Year 9 and 10 students.

NCAT students are invited to an artist talk by Daniel O'Toole this Thursday October 22nd.

Learn about this multi-media artist has created a career across the globe, exhibiting in prestigious galleries as well as the high-end commercial realm.

He will be showing footage about the different influences impacting his mural art, installations and his fusion of the moving image, painting and sound.

Students in the Furniture Making program commenced a new unit of competency this term, MSFFP2012 – Join Furnishing Material. Throughout this unit, students have been developing and demonstrating their skills in a range of joining methods commonly used in the furniture-making industry.

Students began by joining timber strips to composite material (veneer particleboard) using a simple butt-jointing method. This is a common application used in industry today. Students applied this technique to construct the side components for their end-of-year project.

The next joining method introduced students were to use a biscuit joiner. Biscuit joining has become a popular method within the furniture-making industry because it is a relatively simple and effective process, particularly when joining solid timber. Students were first shown how to safely operate the biscuit joiner in a workshop environment before commencing their own solid-timber joining exercises. Students then used this technique to construct the top of their end-of-year project. Through this practical activity, they gained valuable experience in accurately aligning and joining solid-timber components using a biscuit joiner.

The final joining method introduced was dowel joining. Dowel joining is one of the oldest traditional methods and remains commonly used in the furniture-making industry today. Under the teacher’s supervision, students learned how to safely operate a dowelling machine and apply the technique to their own project. For this activity, students produced a serving board that they were able to take home. This provided them with an opportunity to apply their newly developed skills to a practical and functional project.

Overall, this unit of competency has provided students with practical experience in a variety of joining methods commonly used in the furniture-making industry. By developing these foundational skills, students are building an understanding of timber joining techniques that will be valuable if they choose to pursue a career in furniture making or a related trade.

Last term, Year 10 Science students spent a day at CERES Community Environment Park for the Futuremakers excursion; exploring the gardens and investigating solutions for the climate crisis.

Students learnt about the site’s history as a tip and the strong community action from the local school and neighbourhood that established CERES and built the range of community clubs and services it runs today.

One focus was food waste, the single largest category of waste going into landfill. After unpacking why that matters, students got hands-on and built their own compost pits using a lasagna method. The other group tackled transport and energy, reflecting on their own everyday habits and looking at practical ways to shrink their carbon footprint. Students then came together to work through youth-focused environmental issues, thinking through real, actionable steps they could take themselves.

After a sunny lunch in the scenic CERES’s café and gardens, the day wrapped up with a hands-on pickle-making session. Each student prepared a jar of their own red cabbage pickle and wrote a “Pickle Pledge”, a small, personal commitment to action they’re taking away from the day, tied to the pickles they made. In a beautiful display of the connection to nature that public transport fosters, we almost came back with an extra student in Marli the cat who lovingly waited with our cohort at the bus stop on the ride home.

A great day of learning by doing, and a reminder that small, practical actions add up. We can’t wait to see our students’ Pickle Pledges in action.

Recently Year 10 Digital Art and Design students followed a design process to develop a game background and environments, beyond expectations. We are so impressed with their invention, attention to detail and joy in creating!!!
