أنشئت جامعة بورسعيد العريقة مع قرار سيادة رئيس الجمهورية فى 24/2/2010 بتحويل فرع جامعة قناة السويس بمدينة بورسعيد الى جامعة مستقلة، جامعة بورسعيد هى الجامعة التى ولدت ولها تاريخ يفوق عمر قرار انشائها حيث تم ميلاد أولى كلياتها وهى كلية الهندسة عام 1975 حينما كانت تتبع لجامعة حلوان ثم أصبحت تتبع جامعة قناة السويس مع نشأة جامعة قناة السويس عام 1976 وتم انشاء المزيد من الكليات فى محافظة بورسعيد حتى بل

غ عدد الكليات أربعة كليات مما دفع الى انشاء فرع بورسعيد لقناة السويس ببورسعيد عام 1998 ومع الاستمرار فى زيادة الكليات الى تسعة مؤسسات تعليمية جاء القرار الحكيم لسيادة رئيس الجمهورية بتكوين جامعة بورسعيد فى عام 2010، وتماشيا مع سياسة الجامعة فى مواكبة التطور فى جميع المجالات, تعمل ادارة الجامعة باستمرار على زيادة كليات الجامعة لتصل حاليا الى ثلاثة عشر مؤسسة تعليمية وهى كلية الهندسة وكلية الطب وكلية الصيدلة وكلية العلوم و كلية التجارة وكلية التربية وكلية التربية الرياضية وكلية التربية النوعية وكلية تمريض وكلية التربية للطفولة المبكرة وكلية الحقوق وكلية الاداب وكلية تكنولوجيا الادارة ونظم المعلومات.
