Staff and students recently attended the Cancer Innovation & Future Leaders Conference 2026, hosted by African Families in the UK.

The conference provided a fantastic opportunity to hear from experts, explore the latest developments in cancer care, support and research, and gain insight into the future of innovation within the sector.

As well as learning from an inspiring range of speakers, our team made some valuable new connections with organisations and professionals working across local cancer care, support services and research, helping to strengthen opportunities for future collaboration.

Are you supporting a loved one?

Being a carer can be rewarding, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. You don't have to do it alone.

Our Male Carers Group offers a safe and welcoming space for men with caring responsibilities to connect, share experiences, and learn from others who understand the challenges of caring.

✅ 8 fortnightly sessions
✅ Tuesday afternoons
✅ Confidential and supportive environment
✅ Practical advice, education and peer support

Designed by men with lived experience and delivered alongside clinicians and healthcare students, this group aims to empower male carers through education, understanding, and connection.

Last Thursday, our team and students from the Health, Wellbeing and Care Hub were proud to attend Braintree District Council's Age Well Fair, delivering health checks, sharing wellbeing advice, and helping local residents learn more about the services available to support their health, wellbeing and independence.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community while giving our students valuable hands-on experience in health promotion. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to speak with us.

Free NHS Health Checks at the Health, Wellbeing and Care Hub
Could you be eligible for a free NHS Health Check?

If you're aged 40-74, registered with an Essex GP (or live in Essex), and do not have certain existing heart, kidney or diabetes-related conditions, you may be able to access a free NHS Health Check.

The check takes around 30 minutes and can help identify potential health risks early, giving you the opportunity to make informed choices about your health and wellbeing.

Clinic Date: Wednesday 21 October
Time: 10:00am – 3:00pm
Location: Health, Wellbeing and Care Hub

Before booking, please make sure that you:
• Are aged 40-74 years
• Are registered with an Essex GP or live in Essex
• Have not had an NHS Health Check within the last 5 years
• Are not currently taking blood pressure or cholesterol medication (statins)
• Have not been diagnosed with diabetes, heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, peripheral arterial disease or chronic kidney disease
• Have not previously had a stroke or heart attack

🌟 Frailty in the Acute Setting Training Day - 23 October 2026 🌟

The Health, Wellbeing and Care Hub is excited to be hosting Training Made Easy for an important training day focused on Frailty in the Acute Setting.

We're also delighted that Helen Byrne, Physiotherapist at the Health, Wellbeing and Care Hub, will be delivering the training, bringing her expertise and practical experience to this interactive learning opportunity.

Frailty is a key consideration across acute and urgent care pathways, yet many clinicians would like greater confidence in screening, assessment and management. This evidence-based course is designed to provide practical learning that can be applied immediately in clinical practice.

✅ Physiotherapists
✅ Occupational Therapists
✅ Support Staff working in acute settings

Through case studies, discussion and interactive teaching, participants will explore: • Recognising frailty in acute care settings • Screening and assessment approaches • Optimising care for older adults • Applying evidence-based practice to improve outcomes

On Tuesday 20 October 2026, we’re hosting a relaxed, practical training and networking session, led by Professor Vicky Joffe, Professor in Speech and Language Therapy, and Katherine Farrow, Clinical Lead and Speech and Language Therapist.
This is your chance to share ideas, explore practical strategies and connect with others. Better still, you can help shape the session!
