Could running help people with arthritis avoid hip replacement?

New research from Essex suggests high-impact exercise could reduce the risk of hip replacement by up to 48% for people with hip osteoarthritis.

Led by Dr Bernard Liew of our University of Sport, the study analysed more than 17,600 people and found no increased risk of knee replacement from high-impact exercise, challenging conventional advice to stick to gentler activities.

Dr Haider Raza from our University of Essex Computer Science and Electronic Engineering has been recognised alongside Professor Gordon Wishart of Check4Cancer for their pioneering work on SKINTEL in the Research Project of the Year: STEM Category.

By combining AI image analysis with patient risk factors, the technology can detect suspicious skin lesions with 99% accuracy, helping support earlier diagnosis while reducing unnecessary biopsies and follow-up appointments.

As extreme temperatures reshape the sporting landscape, Essex scientists are testing whether cooling footballers’ palms during breaks could help them recover and maintain performance.

Led by Dr Ben Jones from our School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences, the research is testing a handheld cooling device designed by Nice Recovery Systems to help the body release heat through the palms.

He has been loved by generations of our staff and students and became part of what it meant to belong at Essex.
