How do illicit drug markets operate on encrypted messaging apps? 📱🔍

New research co-authored by Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology, Mariela Alvarez Martinez, provides one of the most extensive investigations to date into how illegal drug markets function on platforms like Telegram.

The study published found that dealers advertising on Telegram closely mirror legitimate online retail strategies to build credibility and attract buyers. Using open-source intelligence (OSINT) to analyse 107 markets and 750,000 posts on the app, the study uncovered how sellers utilise professional product menus, bulk-sale discounts and customer feedback to build consumer trust.

Because these markets leave visible digital footprints across public invitation links and group chats, researchers emphasise that tracking these entry points can help law enforcement, platform regulators, and public-health agencies monitor emerging risks in real-time.

Dr Aurora Herrera, a senior lecturer in the journalism department at London Met has launched a petition to add the topic of indentureship to the English school curriculum.

Following the abolition of slavery across the British Empire, indentured servants were hired under temporary contracts and exploited as a cheap source of forced labour, facing harsh conditions and restricted freedoms.

Aurora said adding it to the curriculum would enable young people to better understand the connections between the British Empire, migration and the UK today.

She added: “My research into how Caribbean communities are represented and understood has made clear that there are still significant gaps in our national knowledge of Caribbean history. Indentureship is one of those gaps."

New figures from the Office for National Statistics show knife crime across England and Wales fell by 6% in the 12 months to June.

Dr James Alexander, an Associate Enterprise Fellow within the Criminology Department at London Met, welcomed the decrease but warned it does not necessarily signal “lasting change” as there have been similar drops in the past.

"We will only see continued reductions with continued long-term investment in young people. There is a clear link between the support available to young people and the levels of youth violence and knife crime.

"When budgets are tight, services to young people are often hit hard, when this has happened in the past, violence has increased. To continue to see decreases in knife violence, it is imperative that services for children and young people are protected and considered essential."

Great to see our graduates do extraordinary things! 💫

This is Valdas Dambrauskas. He has just won his first game in the Champions League with Sabah after they beat Slavia Prague 2-0.

In 2002, Dambrauskas made an appearance on Lithuania's version of the quiz show 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'.

He walked away with the equivalent of around £2,500 and used the winnings to pursue his dream of becoming a football coach.

He had never played professional football yet his passion for the game was clear as he moved to England with his girlfriend to study sport science and coaching at London Metropolitan University.

Dambrauskas began coaching Kingsbury London Tigers in Non-League and had spells working at Fulham and Brentford.

He went on to manage teams in Lithuania, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus and Hungary before achieving huge success with Sabah in Azerbaijan.

What a story 👏
