We’re so proud that four semiconductor ventures founded by UCL researchers have been selected for the latest ChipStart UK cohort, the government‑backed incubator for the UK’s most promising early‑stage chip companies.

Spinouts from UCL make up one‑third of this year’s cohort, and are all from UCL Electronic & Electrical Engineering (UCL EEE):

Abacqus (Professor Neil Curson, Dr Taylor Stock and Associate Professor Mark Buitelaar from UCL EEE / London Centre for Nanotechnology): building a modular dopant‑in‑silicon quantum computing platform, enabling scalable qubit systems compatible with industrial fabrication.

Orbicom (Dr Yilmaz Gul, Professor Sir Michael Pepper and Dr Stuart Holmes from UCL EEE / LCN): developing a semiconductor spin‑orbit qubit architecture with improved coherence and control for future quantum processors.

Altro Photonics (Farah Comis and Dr Alfonso Ruocco from UCL EEE): creating the photonic integrated circuit platform to power the next generation of classical and quantum data centres.

Nibras Communications (Dr Amany Kassem, Prof Zhixin Liu, Dr Zichuan Zhou and Alex Bennett from UCL EEE): designing ultra‑low‑noise photonic signal sources for satellite and high‑performance communications.

Congratulations to all the founders!
