The School of Modern Languages offers a wide range of degree programmes in one, two or three languages, or in one or two languages and a non-language subject or subjects. The School also runs a well-integrated Comparative Literature programme. French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish all offer a Single Honours degree programme, while both Arabic and Persian can be studied as part of a two- or three subject degree. Arabic, German, Italian, Persian, Russian and Spanish are all available from beginners’ level. Professor Will Fowler is in Veracruz today and in Mexico City tomorrow, where he’ll be presenting his latest novel Traidores in the bookshop Mar Adentro and giving a public lecture on fiction and historical truth in El Colegio de México.

Professor Will Fowler is in Puebla today and Xalapa tomorrow. He’ll be presenting his latest novel Traidores in the bookshop of the BUAP and at the Universidad Veracruzana, where he’ll also be giving a public lecture on Miguel Miramón’s conservatism.

Professor Will Fowler is in Querétaro today, León tomorrow, and Guanajuato on Saturday. He is giving a public lecture on Emperor Maximilian at the Tecnológico de Monterrey (Campus Querétaro), another on biographies at the Historical Archive of León, and will present his latest novel Traidores in Querétaro and in the bookshop of the Universidad de Guanajuato.

Professor Will Fowler is in Mexico City today and tomorrow giving a public lecture on history and fiction in the CIDE, another at the UNAM, and will present his latest novel Traidores at the Mexican Academy of History and in the bookshop El Péndulo (Polanco).

Applications are now being accepted for the Katherine Hawley PhD Scholarship for students from underrepresented or financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

The scholarship is open to applicants looking to start a doctoral (PhD) degree in 2027-28 in the Faculties of Arts and Divinity - including with the School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews.

To be eligible, you must be domiciled in the UK with Home fee status, and meet at least one of the following criteria:

- You received a financial needs-based scholarship during your previous undergraduate or postgraduate taught degree;
- You attended university for your undergraduate degree through a widening participation scheme (e.g. Sutton Trust);
- You have previously spent a period of time in care (e.g. residential care, foster care, kinship care).

The School of Modern Languages has an exceptionally broad variety of research interests ranging from the medieval period to the present day and engages with literatures and cultures from around the world. It was ranked first in Scotland in the most recent UK national research assessment exercise - more than 80% of the School's research and impact was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent.

Applications are now being accepted for the Gibson-Sykora PhD Scholarship.

The scholarship is open to applicants with Polish nationality and Home fee status looking to start a doctoral (PhD) degree in 2027-28 - including with the School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Awards cover the applicable tuition fee for up to 3.5 years.

As part of the Festival of Languages, we are highlighting the case studies of some of our recent graduates:

EDI Initiatives: Linguistic Diversity as a Case Study
Ana Ross (Chinese and Russian, Class of 2026) and Alistair Grant (Chinese and German, Class of 2026) explored linguistic diversity as part of an EDI campaign.

Ana’s project examines the political and identity implications of simplified and traditional Chinese characters, while Alistair’s explores accent discrimination and language attitudes in Chinese-speaking contexts. The campaign draws parallels with research on accent bias in English-speaking contexts, highlighting linguistic discrimination as a broader structural issue rather than simply a matter of individual prejudice. Their posters are currently on display at the Byre Theatre as part of the Festival of Languages.
