The School of Modern Languages offers a wide range of degree programmes in one, two or three languages, or in one or two languages and a non-language subject or subjects. The School also runs a well-integrated Comparative Literature programme. French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish all offer a Single Honours degree programme, while both Arabic and Persian can be studied as part of a two- or

The ‘Lost Detectives’ podcast series is back! In Episode 8, Claire Whitehead talks to Dr Grace Docherty about the depiction of non-human things (crime scenes, dead bodies and weapons) in examples of crime fiction from the late imperial era in Russia. Grace received her PhD from the University of St Andrews in 2025. They discuss the depiction of poison as a weapon in Aleksandr Shkliarevskii’s ‘A Secret Investigation’ (1881) and in two works by female authors: Kapitolina Nazar’eva’s Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire (1884) and Aleksandra Sokolova’s Without a Trace (1890).
