Scuola internazionale di dottorato e centro di ricerca e formazione superiore in Fisica, Matematica, Informatica, Scienze Sociali. [English version]
The GSSI - Gran Sasso Science Institute aims to create a new center of scientific excellence in L’Aquila fostering the skills and highly specialized structures already present in the area, such as the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the University of L'Aquila, facilitating the attraction of high-level resources in the fields of natural and social sciences. The GSSI is a project supported by OECD, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. It has been instituted as a new Italian graduate school in 2016, after a three-years experimental period guided by the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) with the collaboration of top educational institutions: International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste for the programs in Physics and Mathematics, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa for the program in Social Science and the Institutions Markets Technologies (IMT) of Lucca for Computer Science.

The GSSI is hosting the Korea–Italy Workshop on Multi-Messenger Astrophysics and Cosmology, supported by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology.

Italy and Korea have both made significant contributions to the rapidly developing fields of multi-messenger astrophysics and cosmology. Italy, in particular, has played a pioneering role in gravitational-wave research and hosts major international research facilities and collaborations.

This joint workshop, taking place in L'Aquila on October 25-28, 2026, is bringing together leading scientists from Korea and Italy to share recent scientific achievements, exchange ideas, and discuss emerging research opportunities. The workshop aims not only to promote the international visibility of Korean research but also to strengthen existing connections and foster new, long-term collaborations between the two countries.

Yesterday afternoon, on October 20, members of the Einstein Telescope’s Board of Governmental Representatives (BGR) met at the GSSI – Gran Sasso Science Institute in L’Aquila and visited the INFN’s Gran Sasso National Laboratories.

The visit was organized in conjunction with the periodic meeting of the BGR, the body responsible for coordinating relations between the governments of the countries involved in the Einstein Telescope project and the funding agencies, scheduled for today in Rome at the headquarters of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.

The BGR – which includes representatives from Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Spain, with Austria serving as an observer country – is also the body responsible for making the final call on where the Einstein Telescope will be built, a decision expected in 2027.

Ma**ca Branchesi, Professor of Astrophysics at the GSSI, received the 2026 "Donne fra le Stelle" Prize, an award that aims to put women and their contributions to science in the spotlight.

«To tackle major technological and scientific challenges and push the boundaries of human knowledge, we need – now more than ever – international collaboration, diversity and inclusion. Because different ideas and perspectives allow us to see further» said Professor Branchesi. «And we need the talent of women, who are playing a leading role in major discoveries and the future of science. The message I would like to convey to young girls is this: science is for everyone. If you’re passionate about it, you have the right to imagine your future there, even if you don’t yet see anyone there who looks like you».
