Social Science research at GSSI

Research and post-graduate study at the GSSI's Urban Studies Unit focus on the long-term development trajectories of 'territorial systems', and 'urban systems' in particular (cities, metropolitan areas, metropolitan regions). The methodological perspective in research and teaching is genuinely trans-disciplinary. By supplying resources and an instrumental relational context, the GSSI fosters research projects and learning paths trespassing the boundaries of the single disciplines. The evolution of the European urban system and territory is the main subject matter at GSSI Cities. Yet urban and territorial issues in other regions of the world will be also addressed. Scholars and researchers with a background in economics, anthropology, urban planning, architecture, sociology, political science and demography will find at the GSSI a relational context to work together in an attempt to enhance our understanding of the factors determining the long-term development trajectories of 'territorial systems' (cities, regions, macro-regions). Post-graduate students at GSSI Cities will also have a diverse scientific background, and are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research in an international context. Research and learning at GSSI Cities is policy-oriented, with a strong emphasis on empirical inquiry. The first focal point of the activity is on the knowledge and analytical tools needed to perform exercise of explanatory forecasting of the development trajectories of urban systems in particular, and territorial systems in general. The second focal point is on evaluating the expected development trajectories, and on designing and implementing appropriate regulation policies. Research and learning at the GSSI are grounded on firm epistemological and methodological bases. Through a day-to-day collaboration and interaction, researchers and doctoral students of the three areas of the GSSI – physics, mathematics and informatics and social science – will have the opportunity of building a sound knowledge of the methods of scientific research, and to acquire a familiarity with the history of science.

Prof. Alessandra Faggian's appointment by the Ministry comes as another success for our area and the GSSI - Gran Sasso Science Institute. Well done and good luck with this new adventure.

Alessandra Faggian, Professor of Applied Economics at the GSSI, has been appointed as an expert member of the Permanent Working Group on the Gender Equality Certification, established within the Department for Equal Opportunities of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

The appointment recognizes her extensive experience and research expertise in labour markets, demography and human capital, with a particular focus on gender policies.

La Valutazione della Qualità della Ricerca 2020-2024 dell’ANVUR conferma il Gran Sasso Science Institute dell’Aquila tra le istituzioni di riferimento nel panorama scientifico italiano. L’Istituto ha ottenuto, infatti, risultati di eccellenza nelle sue quattro aree scientifiche: Informatica, Fisica, Matematica e Scienze Sociali. E proprio da quest’ultima è arrivato un risultato di particolare rilievo, che la colloca al primo posto a livello nazionale nei propri ambiti di riferimento.

Nel rapporto è evidenziata anche la qualità del percorso formativo del GSSI e la sua capacità di sostenere le carriere delle nuove generazioni di ricercatori, che lo pongono al secondo posto tra le Scuole universitarie a ordinamento speciale solo dopo la Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.

Questo rapporto restituisce l’immagine di un istituto giovane ma ormai stabilmente collocato ai vertici della ricerca italiana. Per L’Aquila e per l’Abruzzo, il risultato conferma il ruolo del GSSI come polo scientifico capace di competere ai massimi livelli nazionali e internazionali e di contribuire alla crescita scientifica e accademica del Paese.

🥇 We are extremely delighted to share that Alessandra Faggian has been awarded the 2026 Sir Peter Hall Award for Contribution to the Field by the Regional Studies Association.

This prestigious honour recognises outstanding and lasting contributions to regional studies across research, policy, and practice. It celebrates a wide range of achievements, including publications, teaching, original research, public impact, and service to the academic community.

This award is a fitting recognition of Alessandra Faggian's sustained impact on regional studies and her commitment to advancing knowledge and understanding in the discipline. Alessandra’s work spans regional and urban economics, demography, labour economics, and the economics of education. With more than 110 co-authored academic publications, her contribution to the field is both extensive and deeply influential.
