Proposed and led by CFNR Dean Marlo D. Mendoza, the Ceremonial Launch of the UPLB Native Flowering Tree for Sustainable Landscape Program officially began on August 20, 2026, with the planting of Philippine native flowering trees at the CDC / CEM-ICOPED Grounds beside Nora C. Quebral Hall and the CFNR Archway. The first part of the launch brought together UPLB officials, CFNR executive committee, project staff and consultants, and G-Xchange, Inc. representatives. Three native species were introduced across the initial sites: Salinggogon (Cratoxylum formosum), Bagawak Morado (Clerodendrum quadriloculare), and Aunasin (Ardisia pyramidalis).

The second part of the launch followed on September 21, 2026, with tree planting conducted at the grounds of the newly inaugurated Graduate School International Student and Cultural Center, alongside the participation of UPLB and UP System officials, university deans, Board of Regents representatives, and invited government officials. Balai Lamok or Salimbobog (Crateva religiosa) and Bagawak Morado were planted at the site, bringing the two-part launch to a total of three sites and four native flowering tree species. In partnership with G-Xchange, Inc. through the GForest feature of the GCash app, the program marks the beginning of a broader effort to introduce Philippine native flowering trees across approximately 10 kilometers of UPLB roads, secondary roads, and pocket gardens, advancing a vision for a more sustainable, biodiverse, and distinctly Philippine campus landscape.

As the country's premier institution for forestry, natural resources, and plant sciences, the UPLB is uniquely positioned to lead this paradigm shift. Beyond beautifying the campus, the program seeks to make UPLB a living demonstration of the diversity, adaptability, and ornamental potential of Philippine native trees. Through planting, research, and the development of knowledge and best practices, the campus can serve as a living laboratory for students, researchers, landscape professionals, policymakers, and the public, while inspiring the wider adoption of biodiversity-sensitive landscapes across the country. What begins with a few trees on the UPLB campus is envisioned as a meaningful step toward bringing Philippine native biodiversity back into the everyday landscapes.

The College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR) Executive Committee met with representatives from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Ms. Cherry L. Toralde, Ms. Josephine T. Manuel, and Mr. Francis Oliver Mejorada, to explore potential partnerships in developing competency standards, training regulations, and micro-credentials in forestry and natural resources.

During the meeting, TESDA shared its existing forestry-related programs, including bamboo planting, butterfly raising, and tour guiding services. The discussion also explored opportunities to develop additional programs that respond to the skills and workforce needs of the forestry and natural resources sector.

Dean Marlo D. Mendoza expressed the CFNR's interest in partnering with TESDA to help strengthen the forestry workforce, while Associate Dean Analyn Codilan raised the possibility of developing a woodworking training program, highlighting the CFNR's existing sawmill facilities.

The meeting stemmed from a proposed micro-credential program initiated by Asst. Prof. Jonathan O. Hernandez of the Department of Forest Biological Sciences (DFBS), in collaboration with TESDA.

The CFNR looks forward to exploring opportunities for collaboration that can contribute to skills development and workforce strengthening in forestry and natural resources.

Today, 18 September 2026, CFNR students led by the UP CFNR Student and Freshman Councils, together with CFNR-based organizations, the ELF-JODAI, and college personnel, held a walkout to voice their calls for “makamasang edukasyon” and raise concerns on issues affecting the education sector and the communities they meant to serve.

The walkout began in front of the Department of Social Forestry and Forest Governance (DSFFG), where students marched toward the Institute of Renewable Natural Resources (IRNR) and the Department of Forest Biological Sciences (DFBS) before proceeding to the CFNR Administration Building, where a protest program was held.

Carrying a balatengga bearing the message, “Isulong ang Makamasang Edukasyon, labanan ang Imperyalismong Pandarambong,” the students collectively expressed their concerns over what they described as continued imperialist exploitation within and beyond the university.

Among the issues raised during the walkout were opposition to Pax Silica, concerns over budget cuts in UP, the jeepney modernization program, and development aggressions in Southern Tagalog, among others.

CFNR Dean Marlo D. Mendoza endorsed the walkout and addressed the students, highlighting concerns that reductions in the university’s budget could affect UP’s capacity to provide quality and accessible education.

The UPLB-wide walkout had earlier been endorsed by UPLB Chancellor Jose V. Camacho Jr.
