The UP Center for Education and Development invites you to the second in our series of panel discussions on General Education in Higher Education.

 10 June 2026, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Institute of Biology Auditorium, UP Diliman

Following our broad discussion on GE, this panel brings together local and international experts and creative leaders to discuss the arts, ethics, and humanities as a vital part of a university education. While specialized tracks equip students with technical skills, the arts and humanities cultivate the critical thinking, ethical discernment, and cultural empathy necessary to navigate a complex world.

The discussion will also be livestreamed on the UP OVPAA page.

Mula sa UP Vargas Museum:

An excerpt from our museum curator .guazon ‘s exhibition text:

We are invited to listen and move to primordial rhythms in these video works and sculpture pieces by artist Cristina Mejias. There would be the faint whispers of the wind, the incessant drip of water, the hollow clang of metal, and the curious sounds when surfaces accidentally skirt each other. The latter is difficult to describe, only that it touches a chord that lives inside us, an attunement that modern life has succeeded in obscuring, if not eliminating—well, almost.

Three video works and sculptures of varying duration and scale set the tone of a symphony that is less about exactitude and measure and more about approximation and chance, or, loosely understood, oído, our facility for distinguishing sound.

This is the wonder of Cristina’s art: when they expand and contract, or indeed, when they vibrate like the inner drum of the ear, they also measure distance and depth, and, like a compass, they orient us in space.

To embrace the wind and to cradle the water seem impossible tasks: these acts reside in the passing moment, the fleeting, the sudden— in the deafening crash of thunder, the electric bolt of lightning, in the armada of clouds plying the expanse of skies, or the magical arc of the rainbow, if we chance upon it. Artist Cristina Mejias invites us to tune our senses to the imperceptible, the finely wrought, the wondrously unseen, bringing us ever closer to the invisible bearings of life. (Tessa Maria Guazon)
