MATH HISTORY MADE! 🇵🇭🧮
“It’s an honor to be able to bring the Philippines another step higher in terms of SUKEN.” — Gwyneth Tangog
Southville International School and Colleges made Philippine mathematics history through Gwyneth Margaux “Gwyn” Tangog, who became the first Filipino to pass the Pre-1st Kyu level of Japan’s SUKEN World Mathematics Certification Program while she was only a Grade 10 student in 2019.
At just 16 years old, Tangog passed an examination designed for Grade 12-level mathematics proficiency, covering advanced topics such as quadratic functions, trigonometry, vectors, complex numbers, matrices, probability, and basic calculus.
The certification, administered in the Philippines through the Asian Psychological Services and Assessment (APSA), evaluates mathematical proficiency through calculation and application examinations. Tangog's achievement established a new milestone for Filipino participants in the Japanese mathematics certification program.
Her preparation included mathematics training at Southville, advanced classes under its International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and additional training through the Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG).
Her academic journey continued beyond this achievement. In 2022, she gained admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. In 2026, she graduated with degrees in Computer Science and Engineering and Mathematics, becoming Southville's first MIT graduate.
From a Grade 10 student demonstrating exceptional mathematical ability to an MIT graduate, Tangog's journey highlights the talent, dedication, and potential of Filipino learners to achieve excellence on the international stage.
Her story continues to inspire future generations of Filipino students to pursue their academic ambitions and demonstrate that world-class talent can be nurtured in the Philippines.
