STI History

It all started when four visionaries conceptualized setting up a training center to fill very specific manpower needs. Sarte — four entrepreneurs and friends — came together to set up Systems Technology Institute, a training center that delivers basic programming education to professionals and students who want to learn this new skill. Lagman, Gamboa, and Sarte were all heavily involved in the growing computer industry, while Santos just retired from his IT position in a pharmaceutical company. Sarte’s software house, Systems Resources Incorporated (SRI), kept losing programmers and analysts to jobs abroad. Programmers and analysts were a rare breed then, with only a few training centers offering courses on computer programming. There was a clear need to find and hire people for SRI, and fulfill the need of a growing business industry that was migrating to automated or computerized business processes. The founders transformed the problem into an opportunity. Systems Technology Institute’s name came from countless brainstorming sessions among the founders, perhaps from Sarte’s penchant for three-letter acronyms from the companies he managed at the time. The first two schools were inaugurated on August 21, 1983 in Buendia, Makati and in España, Manila and offered basic computer programming courses. With a unique and superior product in their hands, it was not difficult to expand the franchise through the founders’ business contacts. A year after the first two schools opened, the franchise grew to include STI Binondo, Cubao, and Taft. A unique value proposition spelled the difference for the STI brand then: “First We’ll Teach You, Then We’ll Hire You.” Through its unique Guaranteed Hire Program (GHP), all qualified graduates were offered jobs by one of the founders’ companies, or through their contacts in the industry. The schools’ 1st batch of graduates, all 11 of them, were hired by SRI. And through GHP, more qualified STI graduates found themselves working in their field of interest straight out of school. No one among the four founders imagined that the Systems Technology Institute would become a college, or would grow to have over 100 schools across the country. But it did, all because of its unique value proposition, the synergy between the founders and their personnel, and the management’s faithfulness to quality. Before the 1990s ended, STI also recognized the younger generation’s needs for superior IT-enabled education. It was during this time that STI started to venture into basic and secondary education. With its vast experience in managing tertiary level campuses, STI understood the responsibility of providing the same quality of learning tools and experiences to preparatory, elementary, and high school students. The outcome was the launch of the STI Basic Education and STI High School. Integrating the foundations of education, STI established its first Prep School in 1998 in Las Piñas and Parañaque. Las Piñas also became the venue for the first STI Grade School in 1999 and the first STI High School in 2000. In 1999, five Prep Schools were opened in Makati, Mandaluyong, Katipunan, Better Living-Parañaque, and Green Meadows, Quezon City. The following year, STI Prep School Cubao joined the roster of the STI Basic Education System. A long way since its birth, STI has transcended beyond ICT, beyond education, and beyond the Philippines.

𝐔𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠

There are chapters in life that do not simply pass; 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑤𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑒. For me, serving as the President of the Student Council and the President of JME was never just about fulfilling a role. It was about discovering what it means to carry responsibility, to stand for something bigger than myself, and to keep showing up for people even when the journey became difficult.

To GCCL and JME, thank you for giving me a place to grow, to make mistakes, to learn, and to become the person I am today. To Neo Gen-Sys, the ABM Club, and every organization and community that became part of my journey, thank you for the experiences, friendships, and lessons that helped shape my perspective. Every room I entered, every person I worked with, and every challenge I faced contributed something to the person I am today.

I will always be grateful for the people who believed in me, the ones who challenged me, and even the experiences that forced me to look at myself differently. Leadership taught me that you cannot always make everyone understand your intentions, that doing your best does not always mean getting everything right, and that sometimes, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧, 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧.

I learned that being a president does not mean having everything figured out. Sometimes, it means making difficult decisions with the information you have, taking accountability when things fall short, and finding the courage to continue even when you question whether you are doing enough. There were moments I wish I could have handled differently, things I wish I had done better, and lessons I could only understand after experiencing them myself. But I have learned to appreciate these moments because 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑎𝑙𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑔𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡. Sometimes, it comes from having the humility to recognize where you went wrong and the willingness to do better.

To my fellow student leaders, officers, committee members, advisers, faculty members, and everyone who became part of this chapter, thank you for making the journey meaningful. Thank you for the trust, the shared responsibilities, the late preparations, the conversations, the disagreements, and the victories we celebrated together. Behind every successful initiative were people who gave their time and effort, often without recognition. I hope you know that your contributions mattered, and I will always be grateful that our paths crossed.

To those who will continue the work, I hope you lead with sincerity. 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫. Learn to listen even when you have the authority to decide. Give others room to grow and remember that the best leaders are not those who make themselves indispensable, but those who help others realize that they are capable, too. You will not always be remembered for every project you complete, but 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑦 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑚𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑒.

As I look back, I realize that I am not leaving these positions as the same person who once accepted them. I carry a different understanding of responsibility, a deeper appreciation for people, and a greater awareness of the work that still needs to be done not just in the organizations I served, but within myself. I am proud of what we accomplished, grateful for what we experienced, and at peace with the fact that there will always be things left to learn.

Perhaps that is what makes the end of a chapter beautiful. You do not leave with everything figured out. You leave knowing more than you did when you began, carrying lessons you could not have learned any other way, and making room for 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑦𝑒𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒.

I once thought that leadership was about making a lasting difference in the lives of others. Now, I understand that it is also about allowing those same people to leave a lasting difference in you. And if there is one thing I will carry from this experience, it is the reminder that 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠. Every responsibility prepares us for another, every ending makes room for a new beginning, and every version of ourselves deserves the grace to keep becoming.

To the Student Council, JME, GCCL, Neo Gen-Sys, the ABM Club, and everyone who became part of this journey, thank you for being part of my story. I may no longer hold these positions, but I will always carry the lessons, the memories, and the people who made this chapter worth living.

𝐔𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠.

𝑈𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑥𝑡 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑦𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝐼 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑦𝑒𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑒𝑒𝑡.

For now, I leave this chapter with a grateful heart—not because everything was perfect, but because everything, in one way or another, helped me grow.

𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒓 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒊

The years I’ve spent with different kinds of people have shaped me into someone who has learned to understand, appreciate, and embrace people from all walks of life.

Throughout this journey, I’ve come to realize that leadership isn’t just about the positions we hold, the titles we earn, or the recognition we receive. It’s about the lives we touch, the people we inspire, and the difference we make even in the smallest ways.

As I bid farewell to the Council, I can only hope I’ve left a mark on the people I’ve encountered, because they’ve certainly left one on me. Not every experience was easy, and not every chapter unfolded the way I had hoped. But looking back, I can say I’d do it all again.

I entered this journey hoping to make a difference, only to realize that somewhere along the way, this journey had made a difference in me.

To everyone who became part of my story — Neo Gen-Sys, ABM Club, the Global City Council of Leaders, and Stage Group — you’ve all shaped me in ways you may never fully realize. I’ll always be grateful for the trust, the friendships, the lessons, and the memories we shared.

To all the future leaders, 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆. Lead not for the applause, but for the purpose. Be the kind of leader who listens before speaking, understands before judging, and serves without expecting anything in return.

Never let your position make you forget the people who gave it meaning.
Above all, remember that leadership isn’t measured by how many people know your name, but by how many lives are better because you were part of them.
𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒓 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒊 — loving everything that brought me here.

The good days, the hard days, the people who stayed, and the ones I met along the way. I’m thankful I got to be a part of it.
