The Howard University Alumni Association mourns the passing of Dr. Paul Cotton, a devoted son of Howard University whose life embodied Truth and Service.

A proud three-time graduate of Howard University (BS ’83; MS ’88; PhD ’00), Dr. Cotton dedicated decades of service to the institution he loved. He served as Head Wrestling Coach from 1983–2000, earning MEAC Coach of the Year and NCAA Eastern Region Coach of the Year honors, and was later inducted into Howard University’s Athletics Hall of Fame, with his legacy permanently displayed in Burr Gymnasium.

Dr. Cotton’s commitment to Howard extended beyond athletics. He served on the Howard University Board of Trustees (2009–2012) and served as President of the Howard University Alumni Club of Prince Georges County.

His life of service also included membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., as well as Masonic service as Secretary of Doric Lodge #19, reflecting his deep commitment to brotherhood, leadership, and community uplift.

Professionally, Dr. Cotton served as Director of the Office of Extramural Research Activities (OERA) at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, where he advanced equity and excellence in health research.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Cotton’s family, friends, colleagues, fraternity brothers, and fellow alumni. We ask the Howard community to keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this time.
