Just announced: The University of Baltimore is one of nine institutions across the state selected by the University System of Maryland for funding to grow higher education in prisons.

The award will enhance technology and housing support for justice-impacted college students in the University of Baltimore's Second Chance College Program, led by Dr. Al Gourrier through the Center for Justice-Impacted Students.

"The need for public services has not changed; if anything, it has grown. Public service builds architecture for a dynamic and prosperous society. State and local government is where the rubber meets the road. It is where you can have a positive impact and can see it firsthand."

Two students, one high school in Jamaica, one shared path they didn't see coming.

Deshanae Clarke and Rihanna Graham reconnected nearly 1,500 miles from home, now both pursuing a B.A. in Policy, Politics and International Affairs at The University of Baltimore with law school in their sights. Between classes, you'll find them at campus events and active in the Student Government Association, International Student Association and Mock Trial.

We're proud to be part of a university-wide effort that earned Middle States' reaffirmation of UBalt's accreditation last week. Congratulations to everyone across campus who contributed to this milestone!

Following a year-long series of campus visits, studies and analyses, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) has reaffirmed UBalt's accreditation.

Catherine Andersen, special assistant to the president, and Dan Gerlowski, interim dean of the Merrick School of Business, led the team that provided extensive amounts of data regarding the institution's academic profile, its impact in the community, its effectiveness as a provider of post-secondary undergraduate and graduate education, and more.

"[O]ur MSCHE committee studied the institution from every possible angle. It was hard work—but worth it," UBalt President Kurt L. Schmoke said. "I believe that what we've recognized about ourselves will make for a better UBalt for years to come. My thanks to everyone involved. It was simply beautiful to behold."

Commencement week has come and gone, and we couldn't be prouder of our Class of 2026. 🎓 Among them is Judah Contreras, B.A. '26.

Judah came to The University of Baltimore on a train from Fort Meade with a degree and a job in mind. Two years later, he's graduating with so much more. Studying in our Policy, Politics and International Affairs program, he interned with a Maryland circuit court judge and the Maryland Department of Labor, served as a veteran ambassador at The Bob Parsons Veterans Center at the University of Baltimore, and worked right here in our dean's office—building the kind of experience and relationships that go beyond the degree.

He put it simply: "The people that work here, they want to see you succeed, and they will help you achieve your goals while you're studying here."

To Judah and every member of the Class of 2026, congratulations! We can't wait to see what you do next.
