Meet our Student of the Week: Philip Clarke!

Philip isn’t just earning his B.S. in Accounting—he’s redefining what it means to be resilient. As a full-time employee, dedicated father, and proud U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, Philip brings determination and heart to everything he does.

After stepping away from college years ago, Philip returned to UBalt for a flexible program that fit his life. A pivotal conversation with Dr. Jan Williams sparked his passion for accounting, setting him on a new path.

Philip’s journey has taken him from the classroom to global field studies in Morocco and Portugal, supported by scholarships and The Bob Parsons Veterans Center.

In his own words:
“I love all of the professors here at the University of Baltimore. The professors here are subject-matter experts and committed to student development inside and outside the classroom. All the core accounting classes that I have taken here are preparing me to take and pass the CPA exam.”

Meet Eric Jurkiewicz, a first-generation college graduate who discovered that saying "yes" to opportunities can transform your entire path.

Eric transferred to the University of Baltimore through the Degrees to Succeed partnership program with CCBC. What started as pursuing a business degree turned into so much more—he became a peer tutor, joined leadership organizations, and found his passion for helping others succeed.

"I don't think I really saw how much it builds you as a person; I more saw it as just a currency enhancer, but it's much more than just getting a raise," Eric shared.

Now completing his MBA with a specialization in Leadership and Management, Eric is even considering a career as a college professor—something he never anticipated when he first walked through UBalt's doors.

Something strange is happening in the AI debate: political opposites are starting to sound remarkably similar, fixating on either unregulated acceleration or apocalyptic job loss.

But catastrophizing is not a policy.

In a new opinion piece University of Baltimore Professor of Accounting Mikhail Pevzner makes the case for strategic AI governance—directing this transformative technology toward society's biggest challenges rather than leaving it entirely to market forces seeking the fastest returns.

Pevzner proposes large-scale AI missions organized around urgent problems: cancer research, neurological mapping, clean energy, and space exploration. Think Manhattan Project-style collaboration between government, universities, and private industry.

Higher education has a vital role in this effort—not just in solving technical problems, but in helping de-catastrophize the national conversation. As Pevzner notes, academia should ground the public debate in reality, just as cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients move from anxiety to action.

Merrick School of Business grad student Tamara Ward-Lucas faced an unexpected career crossroads. The job she once loved had changed, and she knew she couldn't go back. So she chose to start again—this time with The University of Baltimore's M.S. in Artificial Intelligence for Business.

What happened next surprised even her:

🔹 She conducted research on AI-generated news bias and presented it at a Las Vegas conference 🔹 She launched two community initiatives teaching AI literacy to seniors and high school students 🔹 She earned a nomination for the AINext Emerging Scholar in Responsible AI award 🔹 She was accepted into an international AI policy research group
