Berkeley Industrial Engineering and Operations Research

Berkeley Industrial Engineering and Operations Research The Berkeley IEOR department is one of the finest schools in the world and is ranked 2nd in the U.S

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research combines two closely related professions concerned with the efficient operation of complex systems. The industrial engineering profession involves the design, organization, implementation, and economic operation of integrated production and service systems using people, materials, and equipment. Areas of application include not only

the basic manufacturing and high technology production processes essential to our economy, but also service organizations such as banks, health care facilities, libraries, and government agencies. Operations research emphasizes the basic understanding of the functioning of complex systems of technology and management through mathematical models for the purpose of predicting system behavior or optimizing system performance under economic and technological constraints. Our Faculty are world-renowned experts in many application areas, from semiconductor manufacturing to the design and deregulation of energy markets to supply chain management to robotics to discrete event simulation, and have made important advancements in the theory of operations research, in areas such as algorithm design, integer programming, non-linear programming, and stochastic modeling.

"What I'll miss most about Berkeley IEOR is the community: a small but incredibly strong one that genuinely supports each other through everything, from navigating coursework to landing internships to building lifelong networks. There is something truly special about being part of a department where everyone shows up for each other and pushes each other to grow. I'm so grateful for every person who was part of this journey and for a community that made me feel supported every step of the way." — Ayla Karmali, BS IEOR '26

Ayla is kicking off her career as a Technology Consultant at PwC.

Congratulations, Ayla! 🎉

"I entered UC Berkeley as an Engineering Undeclared major. I had a broad love for technical challenges, but I was uncertain which engineering field truly fit my ambitions. That changed the moment I discovered Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. The field’s core focuses on optimization and efficiency immediately resonated with me. I often joke that I didn't just choose this major, I found the academic version of my own personality. My brain loves optimization, organization, and strategic planning!" — Katie Sundstrom, BS IEOR '26

Now that Katie is officially a Cal Alum, she is kickstarting her career as an Industrial Engineer at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems! Congrats Katie!

At this year’s commencement celebration, Professor Xin Guo, Department Chair of UC Berkeley IEOR, reflected on the responsibility and opportunity facing the Class of 2026 as they enter a world increasingly shaped by AI, analytics, and complex decision-making.

"As IEOR graduates, you are uniquely prepared to navigate and embrace a world in which traditional scientific boundaries continue to disappear. Your education has equipped you not only with technical expertise, but also with the ability to think critically across disciplines, to model complex systems, and to make decisions under uncertainty. Most importantly, you carry forward the broader vision of serving as responsible citizens in the age of AI. Your training equips you to understand the societal consequences of technological decisions and to design systems that are robust, human-centered, ethical, and socially beneficial."

— Professor Xin Guo, Department Chair, UC Berkeley IEOR

"I will miss lunches with faculty, working with my GSIs, and learning about the many ways optimization can be applied to solve complex problems."

We’ll miss you too, Mackenzie! 💙💛

After graduation, Mackenzie is headed to New York City to begin her career as a Private Credit Analyst at Prudential Private Capital.

Fun fact: IEOR runs in the family! Mackenzie’s sister, Amber, graduated from the UC Berkeley IEOR MEng program in 2024 — and their father also studied IEOR. Three generations of IEOR excellence!
