The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research combines two closely related professions concerned with the efficient operation of complex systems. The industrial engineering profession involves the design, organization, implementation, and economic operation of integrated production and service systems using people, materials, and equipment. Areas of application include not only

the basic manufacturing and high technology production processes essential to our economy, but also service organizations such as banks, health care facilities, libraries, and government agencies. Operations research emphasizes the basic understanding of the functioning of complex systems of technology and management through mathematical models for the purpose of predicting system behavior or optimizing system performance under economic and technological constraints. Our Faculty are world-renowned experts in many application areas, from semiconductor manufacturing to the design and deregulation of energy markets to supply chain management to robotics to discrete event simulation, and have made important advancements in the theory of operations research, in areas such as algorithm design, integer programming, non-linear programming, and stochastic modeling.

For MAnalytics ’26 graduate Xingyan Chen, the Master of Analytics program has been defined by both rigorous coursework and an inspiring community of peers.

Student Spotlight: Qianyu Wang, MEng ’26

One of Qianyu’s favorite memories as a Berkeley IEOR MEng student was challenging himself in INDENG 250: Introduction to Production Planning and Logistics Models, a PhD-level course taught by Professor Huiwen Jia.

We’re so glad Qianyu took advantage of office hours, pushed himself beyond his comfort zone, and embraced the rigor and support that define the Berkeley IEOR experience.

How do the rules of a system shape the decisions people make?

In the latest IEOR 101 video, third-year UC Berkeley IEOR PhD student Denise Cerna introduces auction theory and mechanism design—fields that examine how incentives, pricing, and allocation rules influence strategic behavior.

Using a classic auction example, Denise connects these concepts to a broader idea at the heart of industrial engineering and operations research: thoughtfully designed systems can align individual incentives with stronger collective outcomes.

This is the Berkeley IEOR lens: applying rigorous methods to understand decision-making, improve markets, and design systems that serve people more effectively.
