What can 700 million years of evolution tell us about animal chromosomes? 🧬

Darrin Schultz, assistant professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, is helping researchers uncover how animal genomes have changed throughout evolutionary history. By analyzing thousands of genomes across thousands of animal species, the team found that once chromosomes fuse and rearrange, evolution rarely reverses those changes.

Turns out, chromosomes have a long memory!

Research climbs to new heights 🌳 About 65 feet to be exact! Kyla Richards conducted research on moss communities on maple trees in Olympic National Park, Washington this summer. She's currently using what she discovered in the field study as part of her senior thesis. The team collected numerous bryophyte samples from the Hoh Rainforest. Moss definitely cool! This is the central question Diego Maggi grapples with in his work-in-progress book that examines six artistic works by South American migrants. Emmy winning and renowned journalist, Fareed Zakaria, will deliver the 30th Kenner Lecture on Cultural Understanding.

Save the date Tuesday, March 2, 2027 at 8:00 pm in Zoellner Arts Center's Baker Hall for "Navigating an Age of Revolutions: Progress, Backlash, and the Search for Cultural Understanding." Attend this spring to hear from Zakaria, CNN host of “Fareed Zakaria GPS” and Washington Post columnist, who will talk about his career and explore global affairs. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A.

Showing off our summer scrapbook! ⛱️ Students in Art, Architecture, and Design spent an incredible summer in Siracusa, Italy printing lino blocks, cyanotypes, and botanical monotypes, and sketching al fresco alongside visiting artists and CAS faculty. Can't wait to see all the Mediterranean inspiration brought back to the studio this semester!

Can we multitask? Patrick Cox has proven we can. (Proof: I'm currently writing this post and listening to music and editing photos.) In collaboration with Georgetown University, researchers at Lehigh found that after extensive practice of a visual task, the visual areas in the back of the brain can execute the task automatically without the need for the prefrontal cortex. Mind over matter and all that!
