Congratulations to Sophie Nowicki, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, on being elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), recognizing her outstanding contributions to Earth and space sciences. 🏔️ 🌎

Her research on the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets is helping us better understand climate change and its potential impact on future sea-level rise.

SUNY Empire Innovation Professor Sophie Nowicki is an internationally known ice sheet scientist and climate modeler.

The College of Arts and Sciences is thrilled to celebrate Holly Jean Buck, associate professor in the Department of Environment and Sustainability, who has been named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow. 🎉

Often called “genius grants,” MacArthur Fellowships recognize exceptionally creative individuals for their accomplishments and potential for future work. Each fellow receives $800,000 over five years, with the freedom to pursue their work and explore new ideas.

The social scientist and Department of Environment and Sustainability faculty member is among the 2026 recipients of the highly selective $800,000 “genius grants.”
