Good morning from Muller Field Station!

This Hairy Woodpecker was calling out from their nest while we were walking to the boathouse. It is prime time for the Hairy Woodpecker to be sitting on their eggs and this woodpecker only produces one brood per year. If only we were able 20 feet taller, we could see how many eggs they were sitting on!

We still have room for Saturday morning’s paddle, 5/30 at 7:30am! Register at the link in our bio to reserve your spot.

Calling all lovers of nature and art! Have you ever wondered about the creativity and research process behind nature illustration?

Join us on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 6pm-8pm, for a Nature Illustration Talk & Showcase with Amy Slentz! This program is free to all and registration is required- https://flcc.formstack.com/forms/talk_on_the_wild_side_sustainable_landscape_design_copy

Muller Field Station has collaborated with Amy Slentz since fall 2025 to create 4 educational panels depicting the glacial history, ecological communities, family history, and stewardship of Muller Field Station.

Amy will showcase her diverse art portfolio and invites guests to observe and explore her pieces. Amy is a friend of Muller Field Station, FLCC environmental conservation alum, former field studies assistant, and freelance artist. Her mix of environmental knowledge and art techniques pair together to develop scientifically accurate depictions of ecosystems and their inhabitants.

Yesterday's thunderstorm left these three swallows unphased. Did you know small songbirds perch in trees and on fences during storms and face into the wind to reduce resistance and preserve body heat?

Birds rely heavily on the air to migrate- not just for the space to fly, but the correct atmospheric pressure to support their flight. Birds fly best in dense air with a high atmospheric pressure, so they can be more aerodynamic! Rain storms occur when the atmospheric pressure is low. So, migrating birds not only stay perched in trees and on fences during rain storms to avoid the rain drops in flight, but also because the pressure is too low for suitable flying conditions!

Thunderstorms and severe weather events, like hurricanes, alter the wind patterns that birds follow on their migratory routes. Strong winds will displace migrating birds miles off their route, leaving them in a new area with new resources.
