Our Friday Wander & Wonder walk continues this Friday, 10/30, with our special guest, Lauren Mohn of Lilac Nature Connection, a forest bathing company! Join us at 9 a.m. at the fire pit for a chance to wander & wonder with us.

Lauren is native to Rochester but has lived and worked throughout the U.S. and South America and holds a PhD in Botany. Lauren's research has brought her to the Andes, where she studied on-farm conservation of the tuber crop oca (Oxalis tuberosa). Part of her research sought to understand what motivated Andean farmers to grow so many varieties of this traditional crop; the most notable response being their emotional connection and kinship to oca. This learning inspired Lauren to redirect her work toward supporting people in deepening their connection with nature. Lauren co-started Lilac Nature Connection in February of 2025 to support the Greater Rochester region in deepening connections to nature through forest bathing, ethnobotany education, and community building.

Reminder: These community nature walks are free and open to the public, no registration necessary. We wander rain or shine! Boots and long pants are recommended as we will go through muddy spots and areas that ticks may be present. Our loop is just under one mile on even terrain.

We hosted our second annual ACE (Applied Conservation Experience) overnight program: Swamps, Fields & Forest Species ID this past weekend with a wonderful group of 10 FLCC students! This was our first FLCC overnight in our new bunkhouse- the perfect group to be our inaugural guests.

The program included an evening paddle with wildlife signs, dusk sit spots & nature journaling while hearing hoots from owls, species ID walks, field guide instruction, and so much more. Thank you to our participants for their curiosity, sense of wonder, and desire to explore with us.

Our Friday Wander and Wonder Walk special guest this week (10/23) is 2019 FLCC alumni Sadie Woloson. Sadie is a highly motivated and energetic marine scientist with broad knowledge in larvae culture, marine animal husbandry, environmental consulting and assessment, animal rescue, and STEM outreach. Sadie is a Honeoye/South Bristol native currently living in Maimi, FL working for the University of Miami's National Aplysia Resource as a larvae culture specialist. She is pursuing research on how rising ocean temperatures and acidification are effecting marine life in the planktonic phases. We are excited to have Sadie back in the house at Muller Field Station. It seems like we are at peak color in the Honeoye Valley so it should be a glorious morning to set aside time to slow down, observe, and share the fellowship of like-minded, curious souls.

We are full of gratitude this week from our open house on Sunday! Thank you to all who came, explored our property, and enjoyed the beautiful fall changes with us.

The temperature is cooling, wildlife movement is slowing down but we still have a variety of programs lined up through the end of the year. Join us for our talks, walks, and youth programs at the link in our bio.

It is a beautiful fall day to take a drive! Come join us at Muller Field Station's Open House. We are here until 4pm. Paddles, pumpkin painting, natural journaling, nature scavenger hunt, and wildlife investigation (camera trap photos, pelts, and tracks). We also have some great silent auction items, our resident artist is in the house, and we have FLCC's Viticulture program here pouring the w**e. So many great things. We hope to see you!!!

Bats are often associated with Halloween...do you know why? One reason is that bats often migrate in groups and travel through the night during the fall season, right when trick or treaters are out for Halloween!

This Friday (10/16) on our weekly community walk, we will be looking a little more closely at the marvelous world of fungi. Our special guest is the amazingly knowledgeable and enthusiastic community scientist/mycologist, David McCheyne.

We can never get enough of the Honeoye Valley during fall. Just look at those bright colors of orange, red, and yellow... Join us for our open house this Sunday, October 18th, from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. for a chance to explore our trails, check out our classrooms and bunkhouse, paddle along the Honeoye Inlet, and so much more. Our Fall Stewardship Days are happening this Wednesday & Thursday, October 14th and 15th from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., and we'd love to have you join us out on the trail!
